Between now and 2011. What's gonna happen on the World Stage?

I think that in 2011, the left will grow considerably in Sweden and in western Europe as a response to the increased political influence of fascist parties. Perhaps this will to an extent also happen in the US, as a response to the lunatics in the Tea Party movement.

In South America, the left will also gain yet more influence, nationalisations and other socialist methods used by populists such as Chavez will increase class consciousness in the region. I also hope for the Iranian government to be overthrown in the future, but unfortunately I'm not sure it will happen quite yet.

One area I'm a bit worried about is Russia. I wonder what Putin and Medvedev are up to.

Edit: Oh, and China of course. Would be interesting to hear predictions from different members.

I think that's highly unlikely.

Shit's going to hit the fan here in the U.S. during my lifetime, though, I have little doubt about that. I'm not as optimistic that the result will be positive, though.

I was going to say the same thing, though at the same time, if history is any guide, it will probably be more like 2013 or 2014. (I would seriously bet $100 on this, although I don't know what the criteria would be.) Here's why.

At least in the U.S., I don't think it's just a resurgence of the far right. It's also that Obama, at some level, aroused the political consciousness of most people left of Lieberman, even those who were skeptical or completely dismissive from the beginning, such as myself, and even though the way he aroused that consciousness and/or involvement was vague and "politicized" at best.

(When I say "politicized," I'm referring to the use of the word "political" as something like "being diplomatic," or as in "politicking" - basically, rhetoric designed by closet-market-analysts to appeal to specific demographics.)

We're going to see the "JFK effect," although that term has certainly been applied to many different phenomena. RS2K once noted that Hunter S. Thompson called JFK a "glorious sell-out"; although I haven't been able to corroborate that quote, I think it also applies here.

Many leftists, or people with strong leftist sympathies, just basically "gave up" under Bush, and in the broadest sense possible, Obama reminded us we want change - although, again, he was intentionally vague about what that change actually meant.

People thought he was speaking to them, directly, and now they are both aroused and enlightened to the fact that meaningful change cannot come about through the venues provided by bourgeois democracy.

The same thing happened with JFK, who, as capitalist as he was, was still thwarted with bullets before he could fully demonstrate his allegiances. That's part of why the late 60's were what they were.

Obama, on the other hand, never needed to be assassinated; he was co-opted from the beginning. The only obstacle is that people who are conscious of the true nature of his administration have kept the good shit to themselves.

So perhaps my prophecy is self-fulfilling. Or maybe just self-aggrandizing. Either way, once the knowledge has been emancipated, all that's left is revolution. If we get on our grind, the gears might be in motion before the end of this next decade - but who knows for sure?

I wish that I was as optimistic as you are about Obama disillusionment.

The only change I see coming is going to be the result of skyrocketing inflation, unemployment climbing even higher (stagflation ftw) and evictions becoming an even more common occurence. I don't wish for that to happen, of course, but I think that the economic situation is going to get worse before it gets better.

I could easily see China tightening its grip around (if not flat out invading) Taiwan in the near future, most likely to provoke the degenerating US into a conflict. I was reading an article in some sciene magazine about this, it basically says China would win a short conflict by taking out American satellites with missiles, destroying military runways in Okinawa and blowing up the main US aircraft carrier in the western pacific with new anti-ship missiles.

I think the fact of mass disillusionment with Obama is pretty much incontrovertible, except, obviously, in the Democratic establishment, who never really had those illusions to begin with.

The problem is that the vast majority of people aren't aware that there is a third option besides "supporting the administration" and "Glenn Beck and the teabaggers."

This reflects a massive failing of the revolutionary left to capitalize (pardon the phrase) on these circumstances, a failing from which I am not excluding myself.

That's always been the situation, though, except replace "Glenn Beck and the teabaggers" with whatever the opposition to the administration was at a specific point in America's political history.

I'm not denying Obama disillusionment; I'm saying I'm not as optimistic that the disillusionment will manifest itself into anything other than the "throw the bastards out" mentality.

Tea party and Republican party become completely isolated from one another, as a moderate liberal movement that is totally alienated by the Obama administration begins to take large sums of Democrat votes, establishing a four-candidate election for the first time since 1940 something

These are my predictions for 2011.

* A submarine will find Amelia Earhart's lost airplane.
* A major volcanic eruption will occur in Washington State.
* The most popular new toy will be a gooey, bouncy, phosphorescent substance that has a name like gleep or bleem or something similar to that.
* A pharmaceutical company will announce a new kind of weight loss drug that causes the body to digest some of its stored fat.
* A previously unknown painting by the 17th century Dutch artist Vermeer will be found in a buried container.

In 2011 the RevLeft discussion board will blow up as the premiere political roundtable group in the public awareness, stealing 100% of ad revenue from the McLaughlin Group, forcing its has-been wonks to hold a pledge drive on-air and to do contests for guest wonks to win a seat at the table for individual broadcasts.

Major capitalists / statesmen are *aching* to get their war on, as with this current skirmish between North and South Koreas, but the world is, alas, war-weary, so it's been like trying to light a damp fuse....

During the Bush Administration they wanted *world* war -- it got scaled back to *cold* war, with increasing chances of *chilly* war and some flurries before the week's end. All in all a rather comfortable week ahead in the forecast as global tensions go....
