Mass Mobilization for Aug. 30th
Housing now or else...

The KW Youth Collective is giving the regional, provincial and federal government until 2:00pm Aug. 30th to deal with the housing crisis in KW. On August 30th at 3pm, we are calling on people to meet in Victoria Park at the clock tower and make sure that the government will take the necessary steps to meet the people's demands. If the different levels of government carry through, this gathering will be a celebra tion, if not the people will start implementing our own solutions to this problem and target those who are blocking the path to progress.

This is the list of demands that we want the government to implement. This is to help the people of Kitchener. We will not stop until our demands are met.

For the Regional Department we are demanding: double the number of units that they have promised us (they promised 1000 units in 5 years); that they take into account the increasing homeless population; and that an apartment is allotted to every person evicted because of gentrification. Also we want to create a youth Co-ed shelter / drop-in center that we will put up to code when the city has given us one abandoned building that we will bring up to code out of our own financing. We also want a plot of land for a year-round people-run tent city.

To the provincial Government, we demand restoration of money spent on housing to the pre-Harris period; the return of rent control; reversal of all cuts to all social services; the repeal of the tenant protection act; and the scrapping of the Ontario Works Program. Lose the entire safe streets act and end Family and Children Services/Children's Aid Society's baby snatching as well!

And to the Federal Government we demand the end of cuts to the provinces and territories of housing dollars, and that 1 % (one percent) of the military budget be spend on housing programs.

If by August 30th these demands are not met, we will be forced to deal with them ourselves.
