ZB vans. Rather than putting money into worthwhile programs like alleviating poverty or donating to causes like cancer research, the U.S. government is investing in disguised backscatter radiation vans that can ride around the highways and peer into the contents of vehicles driven by unsuspecting motorists.
Now that American travelers at virtually all major airports have been forced into mandatory "primary screening" involving either backscatter radiation scans of their bodies or invasive pat downs in the name of protecting our precious freedoms from the menacing horrors of terrorism (http://www.dontscan.us/), the reaction to the U.S. government's recent purchase and deployment of hundreds of new x-ray vans (http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/0927/technology-x-rays-homeland-security-aclu-drive-by-snooping.html) by state terrorist operatives will be one hell of an amusement to watch.
Privacy-conscious travelers may cringe to think of the full-body scanners finding their way into dozens of airport checkpoints around the country. Most likely aren't aware that the same technology, capable of seeing through walls and clothes, has also been rolling out on U.S. streets.
The government is being rather reticent about the uses of this kind of technology, but here is a promotional video made by the ZB vans' manufacturer, American Science and Engineering (AS & E):

The media seems fond of making fun of conspiracy theorists (Forbes seems to be the only noteworthy publication to pick up on this).
But hey -- who would have thought?
