Your question is too broad: are you referring to the earlier inception of Solidarity focusing around the Gdansk shipyard strikes etc, or the evolvement into a political entity (Solidarity Electoral Action)?

A CWI article on the Solidarity movement, I don't complete agree with it, but I do agree with a few things:

1) It was certainly not a completely positive or progressive movement. In fact both revolutionary and counter-revolutionary tendencies were present right from the start;

2) The relatively reactionary role played by the organised orthodox Catholic Church during the movement, e.g. the Pope telling workers to stop striking.
