Hi,

I'm an Irish Republican Socialist (I think there's a few others here too) who is interested in learning more about the different viewpoints within the Left and getting other people's point of view, as well as reading up on theory and getting ideas for activism.

I believe that the Left needs to play a major role in the aftermath of the current economic crisis which is supposedly being felt heavily in Ireland at the moment with the country likely to follow Greece (without the agitation and protest) into the hands of the EU/IMF.

So yeah, that's about it.

Hi!

What's a Republican Socialist? I've never heard the term.

It's difficult to describe. There used to be a decent Wikipedia article which could explain it probably a lot better than I can.

It's generally unique to Ireland with it's history of foreign occupation. It's basically an ideology which attempts to link the class struggle to the national question and draws a lot from the writings of socialist leader James Connolly. I think it can be best summed up by his quote that "the cause of labour is the cause of Ireland, the cause of Ireland is the cause of labour".

Welcome :)

Are you in the IRSP? There are quite a few organisations claiming the legacy of Connolly.

Indeed, current contenders include: Sinn Fein, Republican Sinn Fein, 32 County Sovereignty Movement, Irish Republican Socialist Party, and éirígí.

Currently I'm independent at the moment, re-assessing the situation and beliefs.

The Socialist Party (http://socialistparty.net/) also supports Connolly (http://socialistparty.net/index.php?option=com_googlesearch&n=30&domains=socialistparty.net/&sitesearch=socialistparty.net/&q=connolly&sa=Search&client=pub-noaccount&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT:FFFFFF;GL:1;DIV:%23336699;VLC:663399;AH:c enter;BGC:FFFFFF;LBGC:336699;ALC:ffff00;LC:0000FF; T:000000;GFNT:0000FF;GIMP:0000FF;FORID:11&hl=en&cr=countryIE), be it from a more class and less nationalist perspective.

Sorry but the Socialist Party has taken Loyalist sectarian murderers on lecture tours and has had a very aggressive attitude to the anti-Imperialist struggle, indeed to the right of the International Communist Current. It has also condemned the prevention of an Orange fascist march down O'Connell by working class youths. They also say nice things about Che but that doesnt stop them attacking "Stalinism".

Given some stances of the "anti-imperialists", such as defending the Ahmadinejad regime, I'm not very surprised that the SP has issues with "anti-imperialists" in Eire. I'm too unfamiliar with the Irish context, or the actual actions of the SP, to make any proper judgement though.
