Well it is the most used, reproduced, and workable Assault Rifle out there in the world. I don't think any Western Assault Rifle comes close to the AK in both Fame and Ruggedness. (Except maybe the M16.) The way Klashnikov designed it, it was a stroke of genius.

I don't understand how this keeps getting the award for best combat rifle?
It's clunky as fuck, the receiver is basically all slapped together, and over all its one of the most innaccurate assault rifle out there.
I would probably rate the IAR the best combat rifle, even though it's open bolt and it technically is in the machine gun category.
The only thing really good about ak besides reliability, is affordability.

Don't care really, if you need arms in a Revolutionary Struggle, go with whatever you can get your hands on.

For an older rifle it is pretty solid, but by modern standards it is pathetic. I think it won simply because it is the most famous rifle to ever exist.

This is exactly what I was saying. Well and the availability is second to none.
But that's about all, i'm not saying I wouldn't use it.
It just wouldn't be my first choice.

Odd note- The (presumably) leftist director of the German film Downfall mentions, during an otherwise devastatingly anti-fascist commentary, that the Kalishnikov was an improved offspring of the German late-issue sturmgewehr. Then recently I saw in a gunshop in a lonely desert town a seemingly perfect Kalish knockoff, all in Mattel black metallicoplastic like the old 16's. The tag proudly proclaimed American origin. Strange, I thought, but given the universal presence of the Soviet prototype, not overly surprising.

I've fired a lot of rifles and pistols. I like AK's and owned a variant. I think that with my experience level I'd be more affective with other options.
Some interesting conversations-

Nipping this in the bud right nao. Kalashnikov was totally independant of German assualt rifle development. The only place thats connected is the ammunition - German/Soviet collaboration in the 30's blah blah blah, there was a 7x39mm round from I think 1939... I'll consult the book (http://www.amazon.com/German-Assault-Rifle-1935-1945-Senich/dp/087364400X) if you want.

I owned a Romanian AKM clone (a SAR-2) in 5.45x39. I put a few thousand rounds of Wolf through it. I never once field stripped it. I never once did any cleaning of any kind. Recoil was minimal, and it fired to point of aim every time I pulled the trigger. It was light weight, and more "handy" than my CETME or the 20" A2 AR-15 that replaced it.
I didn't like the trigger. I didn't like the selector switch. I really didn't like the sights. All of these could be improved-- Red Star Arms makes a nice trigger assembly, there are various replacement selector levers, and the SAR-2 had the Soviet standard side mount that could mount Kobra optics or a Picatinny or Weaver rail.
I ended up trading it to a buddy for body armor and a bunch of M-16 magazines when I bought my AR-15. When the "Assault Weapons" ban sunset, he put on AMD-65 style furniture and a laser pointer sight. At that time, he said it would be his primary home defense weapon (among many options). As far as I know, he still owns it.
From personal preference, I'd rather have a M16 w/ 16" A2 style upper. It's a just nicer rifle to actually fire. The sights are much much better, as is the trigger, and the ergonomics in general.
The later models with rails just add weight, and the shitty handguards are always coming off, and they get fucking hot in the sun and with a lot of firing. I cleaned it a lot, but the M16A4 I was issued in basic training worked every time except for the time I got some shitty magazines (scene from basic-- PFC Pig: "Drill Sergeant, these two magazines are fucked up!"; DS Horde: "DESTROY THEM!!"; *PFC Pig stomping the shit out of two faulty magazines*).
Regarding the myth of the AK being based on the Stg44-- total lie. The mechanism of action is totally different. The only similarity is the use of intermediate cartridge. The development of intermediate cartridges was an obvious development. The militaries of the 1940's wanted something more powerful than the 9x19/45ACP/7.62x25 rounds they were using in SMG's, and they wanted something with less recoil than the 7.92x57/.303 British/.30-06/7.62x54R they were using in rifles. So, Germany developed 7.92x33, Brits developed .280 Enfield (after the war-- too bad it was never adopted), Russians developed 7.62x39, and the USA developed .30 carbine (which was a good start, but not quite right, and was stupidly dropped in favor of 7.62x51-- a full power cartridge). It was an example of 'convergent evolution'.

True true. But do you know what chainguns/gatling guns are called? If they are not rifles they must be called cannons or something similiar to it? What category do they fall into?
