I read his book Brother Bill McKie in a phase when I was reading a lot of sympathetic bios / memoirs / histories about the CPUSA*. It's definitely emblematic of the genre, with its strong sense of history and rootedness but its tendency to gloss over the problems and weaknesses of the CP in this period. He strikes me as a long-time loyalist to the CP and has followed it down into its current depth.
