I don't know what to say comrades. As London firefighters have been on strike these past days the Government have drafted in badly trained scabs to do the difficult work of the fire brigade, undermining the strike but also putting the public at risk.

The full press release is below, but Scab drivers have run over two striking Fire fighters. The video is here http://vimeo.com/16414109 and the press statement is here.

For those of you unable to get involved in support in London, letters of solidarity can go a long way.

Solidarity forever!

i went to see my local firefighters on the picketline. they were getting a lot of support from motorists at the time[solidarity horns] however, it as the first industrial action for some of them and they were feeling very upset, shocked and demoralised by the press coverage of their industrial action.

a few other people stopped to talk to them and offer support. It seemed very important to them to get public solidarity.

I think if they are taking action it is really worth going to personally speak to them and offer support .

these scabs that ran over those firefighters are scum- these workers save our lives and do a dangerous job often at a lot of personal cost - .

What can we do to support the strike? For such a high profile dispute the left has been relatively poor at making a materialist analysis of the dispute, and what support is needed. On the basis of the above, I would suggest that we need, firstly, to prioritise joining pickets at the nine stations which Assetco appears still to be making an attempt to use – see list above – whilst being aware of the possibility that an attempt may be made of the rest of the original. Secondly, we should work out when the flashpoint, or flashpoints, at Southwark Bridge Road will be, and mobilise as many people as possible to get down there and make a serious effort to stop scabs crossing the line. If even a third of the people who turned up for the demo in central London two weeks ago and determinedly occupied the picket line, it would be difficult for the police to do much about it – and would be of much more worth. Thirdly, we could consider approaching pickets when they are stationed on roads, public property, away from fire stations. If we better organised, the Ruislip depot could be a target. If 8 hour shifts have stretched Assetco, it seems likely that a 47 hour strike will stretch them seriously. Strong pickets can stretch them further, and anyone who wants to see this strike be strong, and win, can help with that. The nine stations referred to are; Shoreditch (Old St), Wembley, East Ham, Wandsworth, Old Kent Road, Croydon, Hillingdon and Hammersmith.

Now ive sent a solidarity mail! Really disgusting what happend, scabs will allways live up to theire reputation, at least firefighters tend to get big support among people and this event will probably make people take even stronger side with the firefighters.

Why have the firefighters been striking? Is there any other striking going on in Britain at the moment or is confined solely to London firefighters?

Absolutely disgraceful.

I'm glad to see that at least some of the police are sticking with their Fire Service colleagues and giving them some protection from the scabs and arresting those responsible.

There's also action by the London tube workers and staff at the BBC:

Does anyone know why the firefighters got run down by scabs? It takes quite a lot to decide to drive a truck at someone (i think).

I only actually saw the story on the news once and that was the day it happened. It has got minimal media coverage, the strike at the bbc has got much more press.

You mean the press covered the press going on strike more than fire-fighters doing the same?
