Its not the money given that is the problem rather the discourse that is fostered.

The celebration of the deaths of thousands of British men for little more than imperialism as a 'glorius noble sacrifice' is rather disgusting, but war is wrapped up with bullshit to make the organized massacre of fellow humans palatable.

Is everyone expected to wear them? I mean, I always see people on TV wear them (and even footballers with poppies sewn into the shirts ), but can a regular joe get shit for not wearing one?

I've never worn one in my life and no one's said anything. It is primarily people in a public position who are expected to wear them (not too early (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1323540/BBC-presenters-criticised-charities-wearing-poppies-early.html)*, mind).
* This is a link to the daily mail, so follow at your own risk. It's a fantastic example, though, of the fantastic lengths they'll go to in order to grind their axe against the BBC.

It explains a lot, though. I was watching MotD a while ago, and I was thinking, "Has it been a year already?"

Never worn one either, not in my teen/adult life anyway. Its nationalism thinly coated with bullshit to make us feel like these men died to protect us in some way. The Legion isn't committed to ending war, just propping up the lives of those who volunteered to die in the name of the state.
Wear a white 'Anti-War' poppy... not that it'll end war, but it may piss some people off.

Oh god, this again. This subject is always interesting because it forces all the British chauvinists out of the woodwork.

Is poppies a British term for flag lapel pins or ribbons? I've never heard that word before.

A better way to do that is to bring up the falklands war.

You english folks do have a fancy for flowers, don't you?
Labour Rose, War of the Roses, this poppies thing....
And here in the netherlands, famous for it's 'bloembollen', we just have had one king who liked to be painted next to a certain flower, because the flower was fucking orange. And nobody even knows that, unless they played Trivial Pursuit....

Wasn't the Orange thing related to the Principality of Orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Orange)? Perhaps the flower was just a symbol for that.

Wearing a "poppy" for the victims of imperialist slaughter, along a red star/hammer&sickle badge...now that's something I wouldn't have a problem with.

A few years ago it became slightly fashionable to not wear one, after the liberal British news anchor Jon Snow had a go at "poppy fascism". His prefered item of sanctimonious conspicuous compassion were those vomit-inducing rubber wristbands* to Make Poverty History, or something or other.
* I think there was one for every "social problem" back then, from poverty to chlamydia.
