In comparison to what the Afghans have now and what the DRA brought to the nation, can it be considered to have a commendable model?
I look at the pics and docs of the DRA and think wow that was a fundamentally different country brought down by reactionary fascists and western imperialism.
It did not even seem like total Soviet Style planning, although I admit I know little of the country.
Could it have been a really great model or are we idolizing too much a fallen nation, similar with Anarchists and Catalonia (no offense)?

also, i dont mean to be lauding over the red army, this has some footage of the progress the PDPA brought though.
DRA, YAY.
anyways, dow does one get the embedding to work? it seems to not work for me anymore.
the DRA was probably the best phase in afghan history aside from the now 3 decades of war starting in 1979. Had it not been overthrown, afghanistan would probably be on the level of Kazakhstan or higher. hell, im sure they would have found that $1,000,000,000,000 worth of mineral deposits by the 90s if the PDPA was still in power.
nowadays though the old party has turned into a liberal party.

You have to put the stuff after the = sign in the youtube tag, like:

I highly recommend reading these works to get a better understanding of what took place during the PDPA leadership of Afghanistan:

"Afghanistan: A Forgotten Chapter (http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/51/104.html)" by John Ryan
"Breaking Contact without Leaving Chaos: The Soviet Withdrawal from Afghanistan (http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/documents/Withdrawal.pdf)" by Lester Grau
"Afghanistan, Another Untold Story (http://www.michaelparenti.org/afghanistan%20story%20untold.html)" by Michael Parenti
& even "Human Rights in the Soviet Union (http://www.amazon.com/Human-Rights-Soviet-Albert-Szymanski/dp/0862320194)" by Albert Szymanski is a great source for more information on the Marxist-led govt. of Afghanistan.
In other words, a most definite YAY!
