Just type "download [artist] [song] for free" on google and work with what comes up. For the most part you will need a bittorrent client such as Azueus. If you don't want to download torrent files you may want to go directly off the artist's site as mentioned above.

Why? The majority of profits go to record companies. If you want to support the band go to their concert. Anyways for music the best way is to google site:mediafire.com [band name and song name here]
Without the brackets though.

Torrents to download an artist's entire discography in 10 minutes.

Others P2P programs like Soulseek or *gag*, Kazaa, Limewire and all those virus infected crap.

I still do. If I really like a band or an album, I'll buy a used record mainly as a keepsake. If the band still exists, I'll go to their shows and buy merch. I've also got roughly 30 or 40 CDs from when I still bought music regularly (there has to be $600 worth of music there, and most of it is incredibly meh. What a rip...)

Here are a few ways I download music:
1) torents. Pretty self-explanatory, just find yourself a client if you don't already have one and hit up isoHunt, TPB, mininova.org (they've got some neat content-distribution released albums there), Demonoid, etc.

2) /rs/. If you're familiar with 4chan, go on the /rs/ board, plug in the band or album you're looking for, select the /mu/ board from the drop-down list and there are heaps of links to Rapidshare, Mediafire, Megaupload, etc. right there waiting. It's like a Google-search but much easier in most cases :p

3) "site:mediafire.com *insert artist* *insert album*" This is a common and easy way to find full albums with Google. Mediafire, if you didn't already know, is a file-hosting website that's become a haven for, well, piracy basically, and a quick Google-search will yield a bunch of easy-to-get .rar files.

4) like the guy above said, "*album* *artist* blogspot." This is useful because most of the time the mediafire.com links are posted on these blogspot sites and may contain passwords, so unless you want to download a 100mB album and find that you can't unzip it because it has a password then this is a good way of getting around that!

5) then of course there's p2p. Limewire has of course gone down the drain (RIP :( ), but there are a bunch of other networks which are incredibly useful. In particular, eDonkey/eMule, Soulseek and WinMX do it for me. WinMX is pretty interesting: it got shut down around 2004, but as a result of some quick and determined coders, the community went live again a few days after the RIAA through the courts ordered a permanent injunction be sent to close the network down. It still have some great stuff on it, but the queues can be a bit much sometimes.

There are a myriad of other methods to download music, but these ones are the easiest and most reliable in my opinion. Good luck!

The mediafire way is really helpful! Thanks!

My old desktop computer got fucked up and I had to wipe my ipod and I de-jailbroke it in the process (and I plan on not jailbreaking it again).

The google + mediafire + band name/album method is helpful even for really unheard of musicians.

Is this the kind of mutual aid people need/are these people's DIY projects? there have been a lot of repeat threads in this vein.

for more popular music just google the band or album name plus mediafire or fileshare. for underground music type in the band name and blogspot. I know both of these were mentioned but they are the best. :p

pretty much what everyone else said (I personally love mediafire) but I usually end up buying the CD later. I tend to listen to not a lot of main stream music, so I figure that downloading their music to see if I like it isn't so bad, provided that I buy it later. I think that oddly enough Micro$oft's Zune had a good idea about music downloads.

Yeah. I have noticed. If anyone fancies making a pretty looking post about how to go about torrenting/getting MP3's and stuff I'll happily sticky it.

I saw some people talk about Limewire, and I gotta say, use Frostwire instead, no ads, free, and blue!

I find it very annoying how limewire got shut down and now I can no longer download music because my parents changed their password and I have parental controls which requires me to have an admin password to dowload any new programs. if anyone knows a way around that it would be helpful.
