Muslim woman says man cursed, spat at her in Walmart

Oxford, N.C. — A 66-year-old man is facing ethnic intimidation charges after he allegedly verbally abused a female Muslim-American customer at an Oxford Walmart on Tuesday. The woman is speaking out and says she doesn’t want this to happen to anyone else.

The 31-year-old woman, who asked not to be identified for safety purposes, said she went to Walmart to buy a carton of milk. Instead, she says, James Currin Jr., 66, confronted her and asked: “Hey, are you Muslim?” When she said yes, Currin began swearing, spitting at her and told her to go back “wherever you came from,” she said.

“I was frozen with fear. I was startled. I was frightened,” she said. “He’s actually there glaring at me, just going over me from head to toe, head to toe, head to toe. It was a blood-curdling stare.”

The woman says Currin followed her as she walked to the front of the store to find her mother and notify management. Store officials called Oxford police, who arrested Currin and brought him before a Granville County magistrate.

Police did not charge Currin with any crime since officers did not witness the encounter. However, they asked the woman to file charges – a procedure often used in misdemeanor cases.

Before leaving, the woman said she had one more run-in with Currin.

“(He) began to laugh. He was laughing at us,” she said.

According to the police report, Currin denied having a confrontation with the woman. He received a criminal summons and is due to appear in court on Nov. 29. WRAL News was unable to reach him for comment.

The woman says her faith means everything to her and she hopes pressing charges sends a clear message about how she was treated.

“For someone to attack me solely on the basis of my faith, it’s very alarming,” she said.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, CAIR, is calling for additional hate crime charges to be brought against Currin.

"An American-Muslim woman should be able to go about her daily routine without fear of being assaulted because of her faith," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "We urge local prosecutors and the FBI to consider additional charges based on the apparent bias-motive of the alleged assailant."source

This is disgusting. The biggest irony is that chances are he is a radical Christian, and Islam and Christianity are amazingly similar. All this ignorance is overwhelming.

You are correct: Islam and Christianity are really so much alike, this guy ought to be spitting on himself!

Or maybe he needs to pee into the wind to cleanse his soul

lol Walmart.

Last time I checked, they treat their employees like crap, and the store treats customers like crap.

I have seen people yell at women wearing a hijab -- I hope that's the correct term for the headscarf. They would yell something like salam and when the women look, the person gives them the middle finger. :(

This behavior is disgusting, but unfortunately it will only increase due to the hate which is transmitted through the radio waves and Fox news every day. We need a whole new category of laws to deal with this type of xenophobia/racism, because the current hate crime laws are not severe enough. If people like this are unable to change they should not be allowed back into society, for the sake of every decent human.

What an asshole. It's ridiculous how large anti-muslim sentiment has grown in the USA.

I know that where I live, a lot of muslims are treated wrongly and poorly, and a friend of mine named Mohammed got called a "raghead" by some bigoted rich fuck once.

the muslims are being treated the same way the jewish people were treated by the nazis in the 1930s and its all because of the jews... hitler would be very happy and proud of that fact

Yeah the Bible says women who get raped should be stoned too and one of the then commandments says you can't make carbon images of god. Sounds familiar.

I don't recall the Koran saying women get stoned for getting raped.

Unless the Koran explicitly says something in the bible shouldn't be applied anymore, than I'd assume the word of the bible would still be relevant to Islam, since Islam considers Jesus to have been a prophet. I don't know if the bible says that women should be stoned for being raped, though.

Anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States has been drastically increasing since the scaremongering about the Mosque that was supposedly too close to Ground Zero, and tea-party scapegoating of Muslims (and fear of Muslims was high before those two things). It's probably the highest it's been since soon after 9/11.

Same in Germany, anti-muslim crap has been given a platform in the media. High politicians now speak out against immigrants as well.

And then I always laugh about people pointing at the Quran when most of the muslims in the first world have adopted some kind of "western-Islam" ... xD (Like revisionism and communism :P)

No, we don't have to follow what the Bible sais.

We do believe, Jesus was a prophet, but we believe the Romans have corrupted almost everything he said.

In all, we only agree with the "Liberation Theology" type Christianity.

Very true, most of us Muslims in the Third World have accepted a much more moderate Islam that keeps up with modern standards.

But there is a split between us:

1. Muslim Liberals: Muslims who do anything to fit in with Capitalism, are Liberal, but accept Capitalism, and Patriotism of whatever Western Nation they are in.

2. Muslim Capitalists: Muslims who don't care about politics, but are Western Conservatives(republicans) do to business opportunity and interests. Usually support a domestically Right wing economic policy, but a foreign left Policy.

3. Muslim Socialists: Those of us who recognize that we will not accept discrimination, who stand by other Socialists, and basically want to End Capitalism, nationalism, and Imperialism across the globe.

All follow a moderate Islam, but there is a Split.

Oh, my mistake. I assumed that since Jesus was a prophet to Islam that the bible was accepted by it.

Liberation theology is socialist, so I don't know what you mean by "we". Muslim socialists probably agree with it, but Islam in general is not socialist therefore any Muslim who is not also a socialist does not agree with liberation theology.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Muslim Socialists agree with most Liberation Theology.

But Most Muslims in General do not associate themselves with the bible.

Could you elaborate? Muslims are being transported to death camps in boxcars and "the jews" are responsible for it? And Hitler would be proud? Please think before you type.

Fuck I think if there is ever a revolution in this country the first priority should be burning down FOX news and slaughtering Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, Oliver North and any of those other evil racist, homophobic, islamophobic dick faces.

Hitler was in power before the Holocaust and spread antisemitic sentiment before he slaughtered them. Plus the war didn't star til '39 and while there were some labor camps starting in 1933 most of the deaths happened in the 40's. Henceforth the Muslim situation in America is extremely similar to pre- holocaust antisemitic propaganda.

I have absolutely no idea why he thinks jews are responsible though

Its all because of the Jews? I don't see your logic... Fox news spread massive amounts of propaganda furthering the oppression. 9/11 was blamed on Muslims which set off a lot of this racism/prejudice. That is where most of it comes. Not from "the Jews". This is anti-Semitic and I'm surprised you aren't banned. Unless you are referring to Israel and their genocide then if so you need to be more specific and cautious in your answers..

Why are you surprised? Even leftists aren't immune to this; I know many who hate Muslims. So it isn't surprising that an average Joe should act like an idiot when even those who're exposed to Marxist thought fall for this.

I wouldn't doubt for a minute that this is entirely a fabrication of Fox news. These con-men go out of their way to demonize Muslims.
