These so called "hipsters" run around my college and (when I hangout there) the mall all the time spouting on about some trivial shit nobody really cares about. For some reason they look at me like im scum, like they cant stand the life of me. Like they're somehow better than me because their parents make more money than mine. These kids have very high self esteem for being some of the ugliest, goofy looking mother fuckers around. My friends and I have been taking all the unlocked pad locks we find around campus and we lock them on unsuspecting hipsters gauges. Not too much trouble for them, but its great to watch them whine about it for an hour before having security take em off with bolt cutters if they dont have the masterlock key on the back. These upper middle to lower upper class teenagers are what I truely despise. Not well enough politically educated to know shit, but enough media oriented to know if they really love or really hate Obama. Either way they hate kids like me. They're above all worthless for anything in this world other than talking a bunch of shit they cant really back up, and running up their parents bill. A complete waste of existence?

Yes they are. Unfortunately because of culture they have fell into utter ignorance and felt the only way they can get recognized or appreciated is to be inconsiderate and arrogant. I sometimes think if they grew up in a healthy society how much different they could be, obviously for the better. It is insane to think how far Capitalism extends its evil arm...

Nah dude (well maybe for some kids) but I know this kid Jon who used to be my best friend about a year ago. I separated myself from him though because he was getting heavily involved in the "scenester" hardcore. This is all merely a popularity contest. These kids watch too much tv and go to too many shows where the more of an asshole, the more you hit girls, and the more flamboyant you dress, the more popular you are. The "scenester" chicks really dig that shit. I would never parade around in shame like that to get a few people to like me at different points in the month and to occasionally get laid. Scene is nothing more than a ridiculous concept that musical talent is a thing of the past, and the way you look determines how well your band sounds. Similar to street punk but with better looking chicks. I'm not grouping scene kids and hipsters in one group, i'm just saying they are very close in characteristics.

I really can't stand hipsters even though I wish more people were like them in terms of being open minded, less judgmental, more appreciative of art and more intellectual. They are such a problem in New York. Several people I know have been priced out of their apartments and neighborhoods where they have lived their entire lives because of the spreading of the hipsters. I can't blame them entirely because real estate speculators often drive prices up because they know hipsters are willing to pay more than the native working class New Yorkers and immigrants.

The dude at 2.28 seems to be a throwback to 2007 when 'grindie' was all the rage. Basically like petit-bourgeois kids who were into mainstream indie / emo pap assimilating grime culture. There was this really awful group called Hadouken! that that guy seems to be aping.
Lookbook (http://lookbook.nu) is the best place to look if you want to get an idea of what people who would be described as hipsters look like (obv not everyone on there), or just hang around in Hoxton / Shoreditch in London and you'll see people who'd fit the hipster stereotype in seconds.
As someone who has been accused of being a hipster I find the term pretty meaningless. Hipster isn't like other subcultures where there are certain types of music or fashion associated with it; you might meet one 'hipster' who dresses like an eighties hip hopper and another who dresses like a throwback to the forties, etc. Oftentimes I think people now just accuse anyone they perceive as being cooler than them as hipster, a silly as that sounds.
RadioRaheem84

I dislike hipster culture, but I take them individually at a time.
In Houston, hipsters dominate the inner city scene while yuppies dominate mid-town and right wing conservatives dominate the outer loop area.
Austin is full of hipsters and hipster-jocks.
They can be extremely annoying and overly devout liberal/progressive. They love Jon Stewart and think that all Communism is Stalinism.
But do not judge a book by it's cover. I dress extremely preppy (the only clothes I have leftover from college). It's mostly to blend in and not be judged by others to make life a bit easier, but I am a leftist through and through at heart.
If you guys saw me, you would think I was a typical preppy douche (Sperry Topsiders, Oxford shirts, and khaki shorts, Northface and New Balance in the winter) but again it's mostly to not be bothered or judged in a largely suburban area of town where I live.
So moral of the story; DO NOT JUDGE.
I have found plenty of hipsters who love Parenti and Chomsky. It's just most of them do not go far beyond that and end up in the soc dem camp.
Also, no one in America, at least the hipsters I have seen are that fashionably challenged and attend raves. I love house music but I never see hipsters there.
Hipsters in America make fun of techno music. Most techno, house and trance music is listened to by urban minorities and ethnic whites.

Haters gonna hate. Every thread about hipsters seem more like a bunch of people whining and making lame "Marxist" analysis on how reactionary hipsters are because they're not as cool as they are. :p
Also, at least in the states (or parts I've been to), "scenester" =/= hipster.
They don't dress alike, like the same things, nor listen to the same music.
I'm not grouping scene kids and hipsters in one group, i'm just saying they are very close in characteristics.
I really doubt that.
Plus, I've not seen a scene kid outside of high school.
Don' like Miller, not a huge fan of PBR either. Not really a huge fan of beer honestly. Kalik is probably my favorite, though Corona is cheaper and easier to find.
My favorite is Peroni, Presidente, Stouts, and some others...however PBR is cheap and ok. Since I'm a broke college student...
I vehemently disagree with this.
I agree, high life is slightly ok but PBR> Miller High Life
Either way they hate kids like me
See, this proves that these threads are all about whining.
To be honest, I myself would probably think a sizable number of people on this forum are uber-lame. Just get over it.
This Hipster shit confuses me. Who are they?
At this moment, the label is not very precise IMO.
Hipsters in America make fun of techno music. Most techno, house and trance music is listened to by urban minorities and ethnic whites.
Umm, not in the East Coast. Some listen to dubstep and many listen to a lot of electronica sounding shit.

I think the people who obsess over hipsters are worse than the hipsters- I don't think you're obsessing over hipsters- yet.
It has turned into a situation within our society where anybody that dresses slightly or extremely different from a boring church goer is immediately ostracized and labeled a hipster.
Why the fuck are there two threads about this?

I don't know many hipsters who are open-minded around here. They usually just don't really know shit and will agree with anybody who sounds like they know what they're talking about (Probably to gain popularity) They also lie alot and in general are boring as fuck because they just make up these painfully tall tale stories. Like I don't understand how they even have the heart to tell anybody but fellow hipsters these stories because i'm sure that absolutely nobody believes them.
This is where I move on to intellectual aspect. I have yet to find an intelligent hipster, they are only very good at reciting what has been ingrained into them through media outlets and the such. The only reason they have well paying cubicle jobs is because their parents forced them out of the house at age 22, and it gets quite difficult to explain to chicks why you still sleep in a bed with spiderman bedsheets at your parents house.
Also, if you haven't seen a scene kid out of high school you clearly haven't been to your local mall lately. They are just oozing out of the cracks there or any large venue concert/screamo or deathcore show.

Yah, I agree, but at the time, I was under age, so I really hadn't tried that much variety. I just tried whatever my coworker would sneak to the back of my work place. The ironic thing is if the PBR thing was a fad then, as it is now, he probably would have talked about how great that tastes. Corona is, I admit, bland, but its definitely better than PBR. As I'm not normally one to drink beer to get drunk, I like getting some of the more expensive, domestic beers from time to time, like Sam Adams or Sierra Nevada. If I do wanna get drunk, I buy this cheap ale type beer called Clear Creek. Its Union made, and, as a red, this appeals to me.

It's really pretty arbitrary and stupid. As some article I read said, ten years ago a man walking down the street in a v-neck t-shirt and drinking PBR wouldn't seem out of the ordinary in any way, but today would be instantly labeled as a "hipster".

The crotch area isn't any tighter on skinny jeans than it is on other jeans. Its the legs that are skinny fit.

I think it is, actually. The skinny jeans I have are tighter everywhere than normal jeans.

Hmmm, I've never noticed it on mine but I think maybe because they are for men they make sure there is still room to, ahem, breathe.

Hipster isn't a rich person phenomena. It's as if people think that only rich people can afford weird glasses, tight jeans, flannel, scarves, etc.
It's not more expensive than the clothes that non-hipsters wear, ya know.

Indeed. I'm quite poor and own all the things you mentioned (except the skinny jeans, my build does not allow it)

If anything it can be cheaper. Find a good, cheap vintage clothes store and you're sorted.

The only problem with vintage clothes shops is having to sift through clothes you don't like for ages, and when you do find something, it isn't in your size. Or at least that's my experience of them.

You can't get skinny jeans that fit at vintage shops.
Also they can be really expensive, especially those Brick Lane type ones.
If you find a town where loads of old people live I've been told the charity shops are better and cheaper than any vintage shop could ever be.

Really? Last time I went to that place I remember the prices being a joke. That's interesting to hear.

Yeah, I never really got the skinny jeans on a dude, surely things would be crushed.....?
Haters gonn' hate bro. Nothing beats motherfucking skinny jeans. Also male skinny != female skinny.
As for the whole hipster thing, is OP for real?
Like most subcultures, there is a big cross-class composition, like all 'punx & skinz oi!oi!oi!' are working class

i like my ultra-tight skinny jeans, it makes me feel ultra-tight, ultra-left, and a continuous allegory for repressing/crushing my male dominance in mah pants. :tt2:

I generally agree with you but I think this still makes them more open minded than most. I think they're more appreciative and open minded towards the arts than most. I mean visual, film, music, dance, and all other aspects. They're more open minded towards cuisine, they're not scared of "foreign foods". They tend to be open minded towards people that aren't heterosexual and less judging of them. They're generally more educated and better read than most. I don't think this is solely because they tend to have more privileged backgrounds than the average person. They are not only generally school smart but they tend to be knowledgeable in thing that they've learned beyond the classroom. I just think people could learn something from their culture and lifestyle. I'm not saying people should join the hipster movement (I'm saying the very opposite) but I do think there is something to be learned there. There is so much creativity.
I don't think many have cubicle jobs. They often become yuppies that do have cubicle jobs but rarely do they have them in their hipster stage.
