I'm working on a section to my website on freemasons for the philosophy section, but wasn't planning on finishing it for a couple of years. Weird stuff I tell you, I don't like any secret groups. They say the Temples in the Mormon church use Masonic rites. I have a few books on Masonic movements, many French Offices under Napoleon were Masons. I suspect in the beginning they were just closet intellectuals, but over time they just weirded out, the norms of society changing while they became more and more dogmatic.

The masons are quite real. Sworn to take a oath against abuse of power and discussion of political and governmental activities (whilst at meetings). I know a few masons, myself, mostly older guys. The small-scale branches resemble nothing more than a creepy VFW or boat club. The masonic lodge is probably the worlds oldest fraternity of 'brotherhood' - one of the first known being Alexander the Great.

The conspiracy arises from the fact that SO many powerful and otherwise famous individuals were masons. Thus stems the concept of the illuminati, or the "illuminated" ones. Supposedly these guys have the west in their pocket.
