View Full Version : The Ultimate Example of Socialism in High School

I see a lot of threads by high school students struggling to explain Socialism and this just occurred to me today. It's the ultimate example that people in high school can actually understand.
I don't know what it's like everywhere, but in this country everyone I speak to has been saying that the Cafeterias in public schools are being bought out by private catering companies. It's happening in the school I go to.
Well, before the school sold off the cafeteria, prices were lower and the quality of food was better. For example, you could get a small coffee for $0.75 and a bacon cheeseburger for $2.50.
Then the other year they sold it to some company called "Eatfresh" that jacked up the prices and sold crappier food. That same coffee now costs $1.25 and tastes like crap, and that bacon cheeseburger costs $4.00 and only has one patty and only two tiny strips of bacon.
This is because our school cafeteria has no competitors for food sales, it's monopoly Capitalism. Because there was an opportunity to make more money, they jacked up the prices, screwing us over solely for profit. Did our publicly owned cafeteria ever do that? No!
So when some high school cappie claims "Privitization makes things cheaper" just point to the cafeteria, I just used this example today and it shut this one 10th grader right up. It's great fun.
Figured I'd share.

Have you been to a public school in North America lately?
Vending Machines, advertisements, etc. School have to sell themselves to corporations in order to spur the budget.

Now, the students take over the school cafeteria. Students Unite!

It's a horrible example to be honest. The only thing it proves, is that corporations tend to charge higher prices than schools.
Socialism is when the workers control the means of production. So if the people who work in the cafeteria own the cafeteria, you have socialism.

The point of my little example was that it's something a high school student can relate too. I have difficulty finding that for most high school students.

My school is much worse, not the worst though. They installed new vending machines after the last round of Jersey cuts. Our community can say goodbye to that money.

Around here it is. I assume American high schools are at about the same level, if not worse.

Schools in the u.s. are constantly used as platforms for marketing campaigns. There wasn't a year that went by where there wasn't some sort of assembly trying to sell us something.

Sounds more like a mutualist argument against monopoly capitalism.

 Daily im finding how much the US sucks compared to Canada or europe (in the context of which imperialist nation is better). We never have bacon cheeseburgers and coffee in public schools!

Very true. In addition, US public schools with working class students and minorities always have military recruiters present.
