I was wondering what everyone thought about this. I posted this in the OI section of the fourm because I wanted to hear what the Yanks think of it as well. Yes, I called you Yanks. You call us Commie Pukes. Whatever. Anyways; It seems to me that this 'Election' is going to consist of little more than various political parties trying to persuade these actors to represent them. I think this is just going to turn out to be an enormous population contest. I don't really see any political skill in Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gary Coleman, The Hughley Guy, Larry Flint, or that Porn Queen.

Its a joke, the recall. If 1 million Californians ran (it could happen) they would pay off half their debt. On a serious note, the shortness of the running time only plays into the actors hands. 1 month is not long enough to debate and let the true politicans have a chance to be heard. Arnold will win, I think, and that would not improve the situation. Like he has heard of the words 'fiscal respnsibilty'.
I wonder if Davis could start a recall vote right after the election? You only need 900000 sigs, which is 5% of the population of California.
You forgot the sumo fighter whose running.

I've been pondering this for a couple of days.
Arnold Shwarzenegger will probably win unfortunately because people recognize him from movies that they liked. ( I know...it's pathetic, but hey....they're Californians)
I don't discount Arnold because he has no experience in governing... a quick look at "experienced" lawmakers and governors proves that it doesn't mean much. What really bothers me about the Terminator is his silly little phrases from his movies that he's using already for his campaign and that the guy was a huge supporter of Ronald Reagan. He's a wealthy conservative load that'll do nothing but line the pockets of his wealthy friends and business contributors.
Larry Flynt....funny yes, but a viable candidate...I would say no. He portrays himself as the poster boy for the first amendment but I don't think that'll work for him. Don't get me wrong, Larry is pretty liberal and California could probably do worse, but no way a majority is going to vote for a guy that puts out Hustler magazine. Although like a friend of mine in California said...it'll sort of legitimize all the porn I have on my hard drive. :P
I don't know anything about the porn queen, but I would say her chances again are slim to nil. If a porn queen could get elected as governor anywhere though....it would be California.
Arianna Huffington is running. She's bright, articulate, hates lobbyist politics, corporate greed, etc. She used to be on the "right" but switched sides some time back. She is probably California's best chance at a progressive liberal governor. Although...saying that....she won't win. Because it's California. And because she'll be running against the Terminator.
Gary Coleman. I don't know anything about him except that he was a child actor in a bad sitcom, and I think for a while a security guard when his money ran out. I'm not sure what qualifications Gary thinks he has to be governor, but I would suspect it is nothing more than a sad attempt to get some semblance of an acting carreer back.
What is comical...is that all of a sudden the right wing that wanted to castrate Tim Robbins and other actors for speaking out against the war, saying that actors shouldn't have opinions about that stuff and shouldn't use their soapbox to preach the anti war movement, have suddenly become quiet again regarding Arnold. Apparently, if you're a B actor but right wing, your opinions do matter after all. Just look at Arnold's buddy Reagan. Did you hear the right wing tell him to sit down and shut up? No, I don't think so.
Hopefully California won't elect a governor in a popularity and publicity contest, but after all......it's California.

I just hope that fucking Davis doesnt come back!
I think the best candidate is Arianna Huffington, but she wont win against Arnold

This situation really fucking sucks. I don't want the govoner of my state to be a fucking porn star, failed child actor or a rich meat head with a movie in theatres everywhere. If Arianna Huffington gets more publicity we might have a somewhat sane future. But at this rate it DOES seem like Arnold is gonna win. :( God damn it I wish I could vote!

Actually. Arnold isn't even a real right-winger. In fact, the only think right-wing about him is the fact that he has a couple of Nazis somewhere down the family line. They man doesn't even have many conservative values. He is pro-choice, he is pro-gun control, and pro-gay marriages. I don't see anything conservative about him save for the fact that he is filthy rich.

arnold is economicaly right-winged
i bet you he won't win this election
they're not that stupid
hypocracy of the right:
they critice people like Barbara Streisand for speaking out for the "left", if she gained any governmental power, right-wingers would be outraged, they'd say it's a joke, but ronal reagan, oh he's the greatest prez this country's ever seen.

as Dhul mentioned in another thread Arnolds theme for his campaign should be "California Uber Alles" by Dead Kennedys

He was a die hard Reaganite. Huge supporter of his campaign as well as Bush I.
In my book, that makes him conservative.

truthaddict: Exactly, now THERE is irony :)
Personally, I would like to see Gary Coleman win, because the guy was screwed out of his life by big business and is VERY bitter about it.
For those not familiar with "Different Strokes", it was a sitcom he was the star of when he was a child. Then he turned out to have a rare disease that meant he would never grow up, he still looks like a little kid today, and the studio SALIVATED at the prospect. They signed him up on some screwed up long term deal and bled him dry while he was going through terrible illness.
I don't know the details, but he wound up basically on the street with no money and a ton of medical bills. He has since been working as a security guard and various tiny cameos on TV shows once in a while. I think he briefly appeared in "Postal 2"

The state is $38 billion in debt, a massive amount. Unfortunately for the state, if they do elect Arnold they will be electing a man who has no idea of how to solve this problem. Its likely he will get elected on name recognition alone, add the fact that he has a good image and it is almost certain he will get into office.

Looks like Califonia will be going down down down, maybe a revolution could take place :)
$38bill is a shit load...dunno how it can be repaid...maybe California will be split into two seperate states, the north will prosperge and we down here in da southern desert will die of thirst... :(

Me and my family are currently under the impression that Arnold is going to win, simply out of popularity. Why haven't any capitalists responded? Was there some secret assassination that I need (or don't need) to know about.

It's summer time, Drake. Time to be outside in the nice weather, not inside debating with
intelligent but misguided individuals from the left. I hope you are having a nice summer.
California has some of the highest state taxes in the nation and a $38 billion budget short
fall. The worst thing that could happen for the California economy would be to bludgen
it with higher taxes. Those people need relief not a higher tax bill. Which candidate can
work with the legislature to bring relief?
If I voted in California I'd give Schwarzenegger a listen. He's a smart business man,
he's educated and he's electable. The only question is will he bring tax relief to the
people. Where does he stand?
I've read some of Arianna Huffington's stuff and she strikes me as just more of the kind
that got California where it is today. Might as well keep Davis.

Gee I wonder who the tax relief would help...5% of a workin-poor families money...or 5% of a 100,000$ bastards wage? Cutting taxes will not create money to create jobs for teachers and doctors who've been laid off etc. Wow, they'll really give a flyin fuk of a tax break when they have no job..
Unfortunately all the misguided conservatives got their say with the recall...but nobody listened to those who oppose it, even if the majority of California opposed it they still got their little signatures in front of some supermarket in the burb's. The recall itself is costing California MILLIONS of dollars...if they care so much about "fixing California's economy" why go through the expense of the recall?
If they think putting a steriod pumped Conservative who's best role on screen was a ROBOT, will make a good politician AND will fix the economy...lol just look where Reagan had us...do we need a repeat?

LOL...He's a smart business man.....Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco was a smart business man, look what it got him and his investors...So by that rationale, you would vote for him for governor?
http://www.sec.gov/news/press/2002-135.htm
Somehow, the last thing California needs I would think is a conservative that will let big business ass rape the state. Again.
Arianna strikes you as just the kind that got California where it is today? Then you either didn't read much of her stuff or didn't understand it. She's firmly against political soft money, lobbyists etc. and wants the people to have more say in the political areana rather than multi nationals and special interest groups deciding for them. I fail to see how this could get California into more trouble than a mulit millionaire B actor.

I love this class warfare nonsense.
Working poor? They got a tax cut too. I always have this picture in my mind of a lower middle class
person, working poor if you will, looking at his now larger paycheck and listening to Sen. Kennedy
talk about tax cuts for the rich. But wait Sen. Kennedy, I got a tax cut. Does that mean I'm rich now?
Does that mean you want to take away my tax cut?
Where does it end EneME? Never mind. I know where it ends. It ends at 100%. It's not possible
for the government to take more than a person earns. It can't be done. You and your kind, EneME
will be done when the tax rate reaches 100% but the tax payers, the working poor you claim to
care about will be finished before that. In California the combination of taxes exceeds 50%. EneME
you're running out of room.
How much work would you do if you were allowed to keep 75% of what you earn? How much
if you were allowed to keep 50% of what you earned? How about if you were allowed to keep
only 10%? What if you were working for free? Can't you see it, EneME? The government acts
as drag on the economy. The higher the tax rate, the harder the government is stepping down
on the economy's brake pedal. When the brake pedal reaches the floor board at 100% of all
income being taken by the government, the economy will stop. Would you work for free, EneME?
The working poor and the middle class need a tax break. The rich will just go somewhere else
(and take the jobs with them) if they don't like the deal. I never worry about the rich. By rich I
mean people with lots of money not people with jobs as the Democrats define the word.
The Democrats are hoping people are too stupid to look at their paychecks and realize it's NOT,
I say again, NOT just the rich that got a tax cut. I got a tax cut and believe me I'm not rich and I'm
not stupid either.

Personally I think its as ridiculous as Bush's money back BS he did when he first got into office. The "surplus" my family got back was a joke, but I'm sure it wasn't for the rich. I just don't see how getting a couple bucks back from the gov't is going to make me forget about the fact that my niece's/nephew's teachers are being fired, or the fact that my grandma won't get the right emergency care if she falls sick because of the cuts on our hospitals. The economy is bad, and not just in the state of California, so I don't see how changing Davis is going to change the economy...The same problems will exist.
Sure, a higher tax sucks, like it sucks in Canada...but they sure don't have to worry if someone falls sick, unlike American families who can't afford health care. Of my 21 years...I've only had health-care for 8 months through a University...
Tell me how a tax break will create jobs and I'll reconsider my position..
