Marx also said it:
To be radical is to grasp the root of the matter.http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1843/critique-hpr/intro.htm
I think I've seen others as well.

Yes, it is quite common. For example, the SPGB had used:
As is our approach to other class evils, so our approach to gods and religions: we socialists strike at the root, we don't hack at the branches.
I am quite sure that De Leon had also used a similar phrase.

"There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root." - Henry David Thoreau in "Walden"

Radical, from Late Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_Latin) radicalis "of roots" and from Latin radix "root", may refer to:
Wikipedia - Radical
It's basically the definition of radical. I'd like to see someone do a compare and contrast between Radical and Fundamentalist. Doesn't grasping the "roots" of things not also imply an understanding of their "fundamental" nature. Just a thought...

Hmm I may decide to use this quote in one of my next lengthy essay style debates.

I've heard "A Radical is someone who grabs the problems by the roots" from someone's signature.

Must be why radishes are called radishes. Root vegetable.
