Ok im posting here yet again, i noticed i am doing it a lot lately, but anw, i need help once again.:(
My uni offers a big database, with lots of things i need for my researches, i have to give my first research(on an controversial issue) in 2 weeks, and i havent managed to access the database yet!I went and asked them to give me tips how to do it, but really they did the exact opposite thing from helping me, cause when i use the quidelines they gave me, my browser dont recognizes the proxy, and cant login anywhere(thank god i have chrome, so i can use firefox instead:D) and thats pretty shitty! In any way, my instructions are to go to LAN settings, click on use proxy, and add the address i was given by them and the port to use, and thats just about it.And i did that but whatever and i will do, my browser wont recognize any webpage, and if i do it with IE, it blocks staff like msn too:crying::rolleyes:
Anyone has any idea why this shit happening?

First you need to know what kind of proxy they're using. Is it HTTP, SSL, SOCKS whatever. If you want to try, you can enter in the address and port number into all of them, and hope the browser uses the right one.

But if you can get into the library with the proxy server, but just can't access the regular internet, they might have some sort of filter on it. In which case it is on the schools end. They either are trying to prevent people using the school's network to access the internet, or they have a misconfigured proxy server.

Also, check you firewall settings on your computer and your router. A lot of times, routers will filter protocols that most people don't use. So if you're proxy is using one of these, it's possible your firewall or router may be blocking it. Your router should have a log of all dropped or ignored connections, all you have to do is confirm that some of what's being dropped is traffic you want to get through. Your PC or Mac probably has a log as well, but unless it's running some sort of server OS or Linux, it's likely this feature is off or set really low.

If you could provide some of this information, I could try and help more.

how do you check if they are http, ssl etc? :o the link i was given is without any of this, i mean if others are like http(that are in front of the link) the proxy link i am adding its just plain www.proxy.X.Y type.

Also i cant access anything if i put the proxy on, if i could access the database, i wouldnt give shit about the regular internet cause really it only blocks one of my browsers, so i have my 2 others to get to internet;)
They are definitely trying to block people out from it, only students can access it(or others who will pay) and we are given also a password.

Also, check you firewall settings on your computer and your router.

I dont think i can find that, i may get to the firewall somehow, but i have no clue where routers settings are(yeah i know, i should have known this things, im studying computer science, but fuck i have never been one of those people giving fuck about such things). Its a PC on windows vista btw.

Are you sure they didn't give you a proxy script as opposed to the address of the proxy server. Usually the server will not have a www in it, which is why I think it might be a script. Although, earlier you mentioned that you had the port number, so this would mean it's probably not a script.

In any case, it doesn't hurt to try. In the same window where you enter in the proxy server, you should see a place where you can enter a proxy script. Make sure you have that option selected too.

Also, it's in that same window that you'll find a place to put SSL, SOCKS and other types of proxies. They're just different protocols, using different types of encryption. I'd go ahead and try them all, and see if one works. Just make sure you have that option selected. (Manual or Automatic proxy configuration).

Since you can't access anything, then there's something wrong somewhere. I think what's supposed to happen is once you connect to the proxy, you will be redirected to a password page. So I think it'd be OK if you send me the proxy address, and I can check if I'm being redirected to the password page. It will be useless to me without the password anyway, but at least I'll be able to confirm that it's working.

At the very least, what is the port number for the proxy server?

If you use wireless, there should be two boxed. One connected to the wall, and another one connected to the previous one. The router is the second one. You can usually access the options by typing 192.168.1.1 or something similar in your browser.

Have you tried using the proxy at a coffee shop or some other public wifi (or even a friend's house). If it don't work in any of these places, then it's likely it's not the router, although it's possible these routers are also blocking that traffic. But if it does work somewhere else, then you can be 99% sure it's your router. Or do you live in a dorm with wifi provided.

Good luck.
