I do too and thank you for it. It was big of you to leave it that way. Thanks.
I hope I don't get whacked for quoting from the last chatter thread:
I think in a few years from now they are going to have to send Captain Benjamin Willar to find Lieut. Ferret- he'll go off the rails in some jungle somewhere and start writing poetry and collecting old Time magazines... I would have thanked this post for its originality, but I can't cause I've got the Lt.'s back here, as he will cover mine when the Revolution gets bloody.
Either way I am pretty certain ComradeMan is a poet or a savant or ... something heavy. "Collecting old Time magazines?"

Actually not so much. I thought the story was good and thought it had a lot of promise but the combat was boring and the planet exploring thing wasn't all that fleshed out at all.

Red Dead Redemption was good but had a lot of extra shit that could have been cut out (see: those fucking night watch missions with that stupid fucking dog).
Super Street Fighter IV was one of the few videogames I've spent more than $20 for without regretting it a single bit.
But my favorite games of all time are mostly on the PC. Civilization, STALKER, Team Fortress 2, the Total War series, and the myriad of excellent indie games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress.
So yeah.
EDIT: Also ARMA 2 and Men Of War are two of the best games ever made.

Just finished watching this incredible anime series called Last Exile.
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4286/lastexile1521024.jpg
It was...incredible. It felt so touching that I could literally cry at the end. I really do enjoy every aspect of it: the vanships, Sylvanna of the Genocide, Aru, the navis, everything. After watching it, all I could wish for was to fly towards the horizon on board Claus' vanship, feeling the wind in the face while doing an Immelman turn. Very good series, a must see for every steampunk/dieselpunk/retro-futurism fan!!!

Are you a big fan of anime, Hayet? Because I've had a lot of people say OH OH WATCH THIS ANIME IT IS AMAZING and then I find I don't really enjoy it because it's got a lot of things that really only appeal to people who watch anime, if that makes sense.
Like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan (which is a very popular series and not some weird niche shit). It was cool with the robots and the PIERCE THE HEAVENS stuff and all but there were things that I couldn't get past so it ruined it for me.
Like the fact that this character:

Not really. I rarely watch anything with cartoons. Only anime stuff I watch is that series and a couple of post-apocalyptic movies, as well cyberpunk stuff like AKIRA.
What the christ anime producers.
Unfortunately it seems that Japan has been swallowed by its own demand of consumerism. And also weird fetiches. Some cartoons are just weird and almost touching the pedophilia sphere.

haha. You know what's weird? Thatcherpunk. A friend of mine pioneered it. Its basically a post-nuclear Britain during the 80s. Example. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Wind_Blows_(film))
What's really cool (going back to reality for a bit) is that in the future people will be drawn to stuff like ecopunk, as retro-futurism, which is currently our futurist source of material ("dude, those folks back from the early 21st century thought we would actually have solar panels on everyone's homes!")

I remember, a few years ago now, I first discovered what "steampunk" was and I thought 'ooh this stuff looks cool'. Then I find out what just about everyone else in the world who liked steampunk was like and decided "fuck 'em". Jesus christ, maybe it's just the ones in the UK and US (especially the US, because they can fuck everything up) but they introduced me to the entirely new feeling of wishing to beat someone to death with their own valve. I've only ever seen Havet talk about dieselpunk and he seems more normal than the average one* but anything that draws from a similar pool of people but is even more obscure is bound to include a more distilled version of the wankers from the larger movement.
It's similar to the reason I'm hesitant to get involved in LARPing. Apart from everything (http://www.criticalmiss.com/issue2/lrp1.html)else (http://www.criticalmiss.com/issue6/moreliveaction1.html)a five minute chat with the average LARP enthusiast will send you screaming and tumbling over the edge of sanity in sheer bloody annoyance. What strikes me as really unfortunmate with that though is that its people who have an essentially social hobby who are that obnoxious - that takes true dedication to the art of pissing off every half-way normal person near you.
*This isn't to say that Havet's normal. He likes the free market which makes anyone a bit of a suspicious mentalist in my books but that just illustrates how irritating and subnormal the people attracted by steampunk are.

Damn, back where im from nobody ever heard of it. I suppose the more something becomes mainstream the less people will like it as it starts to become annoying.
As far as I am able to judge, both steampunk and dieselpunk serve no practical purpose other than to allow artists to express themselves differently and in new ways.
A good thing about the whole steampunk is that its gotten a lot more people into a diy feeling of getting their hands dirty and actually building something new.

I was drunk the other night and I'm on the second book in the "Ice and Fire" series- right where Jon Snow is on his first range with the Nightwatch- all in black and everything- It was snowing lightly in the book and it's generally a cold environment where they're at and it's of course raining and cold in Portland here and I thought- with this outfit I'm wearing right now- I sort of look like the character from 'Thief' (the video game)-
And so basically I'm saving up for a sword and mail now.

Damn, back where im from nobody ever heard of it. I suppose the more something becomes mainstream the less people will like it as it starts to become annoying. The internet was soaked in it plus my friends and I are all on the geeky side (even the guy that plays football).
As far as I am able to judge, both steampunk and dieselpunk serve no practical purpose other than to allow artists to express themselves differently and in new ways. You're lucky then. I've found a lot of people treat it as a subculture. That and the people attracted to the various bits of steampunk media (the steampunk-inspired bands and steampunk LARPs are particularly bad) as fans (or players in the LARP case) rather than creators just seem to be as described. Most artists and the like are quite cool really.
A good thing about the whole steampunk is that its gotten a lot more people into a diy feeling of getting their hands dirty and actually building something new. For every one that creates something worthwhile 12 more will weld cogs to their (completely unecessary) goggles. Either that or affect a great love for oldschool steam engineering without being able to describe a single component on a steam engine.

Nope, I actually got another job recently- construction type work- but I'm still applying to places by using this electronic system called email. So I also use what's often called 'the internet' to visit several of my current favorite 'websites' to break up the tedium.
I figure this is better than tossing hand grenades at farmer's livestock, raping women and torturing trialless innocents in my free time. I've always bettered my life when I could. It also feels good to identify with my class camp- as opposed to being a class traitor.

I advocate being healthy to the best of one's ability- I see drugs as being a 'problem' for a variety of reasons and I often chose sobriety over intoxication in the same way that I eat healthy rather than unhealthy.
The difference in the two discussions is that from what I gathered you were advocating a boycott as a revolutionary tactic where as I see that as being ineffective and extremely time consuming.
There are not a lot of leftists that would do tons of drugs (the majority of them don't) in the same way that many leftists wouldn't feel comfortable walking into a Mcdonalds, Starbucks or Burger King- or a Gap/Nike/Guess outlet.
We were differing in our approach to the conflict rather than the intent.
My original (as in a while ago) stance on this issue is if you can avoid such stores- avoid them- as I would advocate sobriety because drugs CAN cause issues in some people as I think I mentioned in a thread about a month ago.
In regards to combating the cartels- you need to spend a lot of time organizing and agitating against Capitalism which allows such corruption as child labor, cartels, agribusiness violations- etc.. simply not spending your money there isn't effective as a tactic for massive social or political change.
While I advocate every activist not supporting what they're fighting with their hard earned dollars- it's their choice.
I don't think this is revolutionary- it's just something that should come automatically and perhaps I wasn't as clear as I should have been
I don't want to recreate that thread- I mean I really really don't. I am doing nothing more than restating some things- you don't have to respond because I likely already know your response- and that isn't a slight.
This post is disjointed because there are two very loud young women next to me yelling and laughing and fEdit- that was an exclamation and not a description of what they were doing- my apologies on their behalf

Reuters – Mon Nov 1, 9:57 am ET (Reuters) – British police said it had responded on Monday to a frantic call from the wife of Amir Ezreddin, proprietor of "Kebabs 'R Us" in Rutland County. Preliminary reports indicate that an irate young male threw a brick through the front window, ran in, leaped over the counter and attempted to strangle Mr. Ezreddin. Customers in the store managed to subdue the subject, by then screaming incoherently, and held him down as Mrs. Ezreddin phoned police. "Oh yes, we know him. He's always been the nicest young man. I can't imagine what's got into him," she said through tears.
Witness Jeremy Wright gave a statement to police obtained by this service. "I was one of the first to reach him. I kept asking him what the problem was. He just spat at me, wild-like, see? kicking and screaming something about eels, I think it was. 'Feed me eels, will he!?!? I'll f---ing kill 'im, the fat bleedin' f--k!!' He got this insane idea somewhere that Amir cooks eels and passes 'em off as meat. Amir would never do that. At least I don't think he would. Maybe to Yanks, but not to us regulars."
A police spokesman advised that the suspect was referred to hospital where he was tranquilized and strapped to his bed. Charges of criminal mischief and simple battery are pending.

eels is a form of meat, and why would it be dangerous to serve it, its seafood, nothing more nothing less.

In some parts of the south of Italy a lot of shellfish and octopus are basically consumed the same way- not cooked. You have to be careful though. I must admit it's not to everyone's tastes though...

A Turkish friend of mine told me that the kebab shops in the UK bear as much resemblance to her native town of Izmir/Smyrna as oil does to water....

See that: that's offal and grains that is. It tastes fucking delicious so you can keep your fucking continental snobbery. Also, I've never seen anyone elses quisine produce anything quite as pleasurable as roast beef smothered in gravy with some of these little motherfuckers on the side:
http://only-cookware.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/yorkshire-pudding-7.JPG
All that without going into such delights as black pudding, the stonner kebab, chicken tikka massala, balti, kippers, faggots, our pies (which only Australians can come close to matching), stilton, cheddar, jellied eels, cockles, Irish stew, soda bread, potato farls and the abundance of others. Oh and there is nowhere better for stout, bitter, ale, whisky or whiskey.
I don't mean to come off as a food nationalist (and indeed I am not, I am very much an internationalist when it comes to ramming the culinary produce of every nation down my gullet) but it's fucking irritating to listen to the endless "oh ho ho the british can't cook" bollocks that comes from places like america or continental europe. Especially as it's so often an excuse to bash simple, wholesome food in preference to poncy little meals that take hours to prepare and seconds to eat.

- It doesn't surprise me- the food is always going to be potentially better when produced in the home culture. Chinese restaurants here are pretty terrible compared to the ones in London- in my opinion.
See that: that's offal and grains that is. It tastes fucking delicious so you can keep your fucking continental snobbery. Also, I've never seen anyone elses quisine produce anything quite as pleasurable as roast beef smothered in gravy with some of these little motherfuckers on the side:

-We have black puddings (sanguinaccio) and so do the French, kebab is Turkish, the curry dishes were adaptations of Indian food, faggots????- stilton is the same/similar to gorgonzola, cheddar is like provolone, jellied eels are revolting- I tried them in London, Irish stew- is that British? LOL!!! Not sure about some of the others but the beers and whiskies are good too- but 3,500 years of wine tradition is good as well!

kebab is Turkish, The stonner is glaswegian.
the curry dishes were adaptations of Indian food, So, they were invented in britain by british citizens - it's not just white people that make our rich and varied cuisine.
faggots???? A type of highly delicious meatball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot_%28food%29).
stilton is the same/similar to gorgonzola, cheddar is like provolone, I think stilton is superior to gorgonzola. I've never had provolone.
jellied eels are revolting- I tried them in London, You're wrong and you know you are.
Irish stew- is that British? LOL!!! It was developed on the British isles.
Not sure about some of the others but the beers and whiskies are good too- but 3,500 years of wine tradition is good as well! I'm not denigrating your wine, I neck enough of the stuff enough. You also have us bang to rights on lager - our flagship lager is Carling and I wouldn't let a dog drink it.
-I'm only pulling your leg.....! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Americans can hardly talk about food either- they ruined the pizza. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They ruined food forever. They made a doughnut burger for fuck's sake.

I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse, but we have no French representative on OI to weigh on on these culinary issues. I've lived there some and am half French, if the Cajun peasant farmer variety, so I will have to do for the moment:
French food is to die for. Yes, they serve cold, burnt pizzas on the street, but everything else, from buttered croissant to seafood soup to salade niçoise to boeuf bourgignon to foie gras to crème caramel to strawberry crepes to tarte aux pommes, are all just wonderful.
And then the wine ... Oh, my, god.
My suspicion is that the secret's in the soil. You drive through Normandy and see the biggest, prettiest, fattest, happiest cows you ever saw. They're happy because they eat rich green grass and they give off fat rich milk which yields luscious camembert and fragrant roquefort cheese to peach ice cream and crème caramel.

Is there any way that we can possibly remind everyone that there is a religion subsection for OI discussion of religion- rather than flooding the main area with religious threads- I'm obsessive compulsive and it appears to be very disorganized and it's been bothering me since yesterday.
Thanks

I was born of Wolves and Orcas the late summer south-eastern Pennsylvania cicada the mighty early Autumn Gryllidae- of southern rainforests and western desert birds of prey-
Thunder, greenery, ice and warm weather noreasters.
I'm an Atheist that feels- I know my roots and understand how my cycle works.

So you are a Methodist!
It is all about the "cycle," isn't it?!?
That Charles Whesley wrote some great song cycles, didn't he?
We sing them in our Catholic church regularly.

This computer I'm using just freaked out- this should be Neko Case's 'John Saw That Number' - I apologize if it's instead something alarming
It is but it's messing with this laptop. Nevermind I've posted it before.

Actually- it sucks that the sys reqs aren't going to be out until like 2011-
Who wants to guild up with me when it's released?

Edit- Sorry I got excited- yes, it's free to play.
I heard WoW was going to become free as well but I don't know how true that is.

I played the original GW up until I came out here to PDX. Got one last winter festival in before leaving forever.

I play WoW because I'm a pathetic basement dwelling manbaby neckbeard and I haven't heard anything about it becoming free to play. Whispers about it, but nothing really huge.
But yeah I might get into GW2 if it's free to play.

I suggested in my laptop thread (I'm no longer looking for a laptop btw- I'm looking to build a gaming rig as work has become steady and I can afford internet now) that we form a revleft guild- there can be various sectarian factions within it as well.
This gives me something to look forward too.
I even quit smoking for the extra bit of money to build a decent rig.
I ultimately need it for school but you know- multi purpose is always better.

Lol.
I played GW up until Nightfall (didn't get EotN). Started with PvE, but towards the end I mostly did Guild Battles, Faction Battles and HA. Usually as Monk.

I had a maxed W/M as well but it was towards the end of my playing the game
My main character was the R/E and I'd run people- although R/E wasn't the main running combo
I only played the original.
I'm going to play the hell out of GW 2 and probably fail some exams because of it- just like old times.

The three of us should keep in touch for when it comes out- with most games I generally TK and annoy the piss from everyone around me but I think I can not do that with this type of game.
I've also played 'Starsiege' Tribes- the original- since it came out.

Yeah, the main things that have stopped me from playing are evictions and such under varying circumstances. I've been able to lock down two years of solid playing at a time which was enough to keep my interest- and of course canceling internet so I could afford other things which happend once already here.

fucking christ ARMA 2 is fun.
me and my friend just went hard guerilla styles in the wilderness of Eastern Europe.
The highlights:
- Taking out a BTR-90 with a SMAW from at least 400 meters.
- Evading about 4 squads of infantry that swarmed the woods to find us.
- Stumbling upon a squad less than 50 meters away, and escaping unscathed.
- Taking out a Hind, while evading that squad we stumbled on, taking heavy fire in a field with limited (no) cover.
Shit owns.

My vinil record player stoped spinning, for no apparent reason. Any "older" people have any suggestions I might try? If it's a "cheepie" it has a big rubber band under the spinning disk turn table that goes from the motor to a track on the bottom of the disk. It sometimes falls off. Lift off the turn table plate and see. It's a simple matter to reattach.
And I'm not old. :thumbup1:

What's with these new fangled contraptions... rubber bands? Pah--- mine still winds up with a handle. !
Seriously- take the spinning disk and check that the rotors are not filled with dust, a bit of sewing machine oil might help too.
