Hello from the UK. Joined this site looking for some interesting (hopefully) debate, as well as to look at different leftist perspectives.

I'm a Leninist myself, but I really hate labels. In fact I especially hate the leninist tendency to whack off over either Stalin or Trotsky and get incredibly dogmatic about everything.

Originally got interested in Marxism and leftwing politics when I picked up a copy of Banksy's "Wall and Piece" when I was 14. Since then I was a pretty wishy-washy idealistic socialist, until I found my grandmother's copy of Lenin's "the state and revolution" (she was a a communist party member back in the 40s and 50s) and decided "hey, you know what, this Lenin guy makes alot of sense." I'd come into contact with Marx before, since I'd read the Manifesto, but it was only once I read TS&R that I really got into it.

So yeah. HAI THAR. I live in the UK, so obviously there's not much to say when it comes to leftist activity. Especially here in the Midlands. (read: EDL/conservative hotbed)

Welcome :)

Are you politically active or a member of any group?

No, like I said, leftism is pretty dead in my neck of the woods, so there's not much I can actually get to do politically, other than try and influence others on an individual level, which, If I'm totally honest I've been quite good at thus far.

I'm also a student union rep at the college I go to, but that doesn't really count, imo.

Anything counts, it's what you do with it :)

I can for example imagine that as a student rep you can hold meetings or start a campaign on an issue.

Oh, hello there! I'm new as well but I'm getting tuned in quite well and I'm sure you will as well! ;)

Well, my jurisdiction atm only covers the art dept, so there are limits to what I can do. But since the cutbacks and the government's favouring of science and mathematics, I suppose I've already done something to fight the cuts, even if it's just trying to preserve the art department's budget.

Not an easy job though. Those faceless college bureaucrats don't have an ounce of emotion in them.

@Ivan Jansa: welcome to you too comrade. Bad luck with those swedish bikers btw. Very sad to hear it
