cmon old geezers! reminisce about the good old days of chitchat! they days of epic lulz! when we didnt have over 9000 irate polls about tendencies or user circlejerking, the days when we werent infested by corny internet meme's from /b/ (i plea guilty too), when we had topics about semi political obscurities, when we used to share epic stories about our diverse social lives (in contrast to the lifeless social rejects that haunt this forum now), when we didnt wage all out pathetic flame wars against obscure psuedo leftist vloggers nobody gives a shit about, when the chit-chat awards was something to look foward to, when people didnt change their user names a trillion times, when highbrow and lowbrow discussion actually made you laugh, when you didnt close your browser window in contempt thinking "why the fuck did i open chitchat anyway"?

I think it's interesting that you find plenty to complain about with the current state of affairs, but yet the stuff that supposedly used to make Chit-Chat great somehow escapes you.

Great piece of "political" drama. A Revleft thread is an organisational meeting!
Of course, after the dramatic split, both FPM and the CL decided that they were real "Parties" after all, and so we got "Party of World Revolution" (PoWR) and the "Workers' Party in America".

I'm pretty sure he was. I started racking my brain for recollections about him, and I remembered that, that he used to have a huge reggae addiction, and that he was the one who Mormoned me into the CC initially.

There used to be a ranking system that gave you a title based on post count. If I remember correctly, it went compañero/a, guerrillista, subcommandante, commandante... Something along those lines. There were others, I think, like the fabled presidente, which could only be achieved through like 10,000 posts if memory serves. It was all in keeping with the "Che-Lives" theme.
Post count was one of the primary determinants to get into the old CC (along with post quality, of course), but it was determined that too many people were padding their counts posting one liners and goofy shit in Shit Chat and thereby giving a false representation of contribution to the board.

Funny. I don't remember any of what you wrote after the FPM breaking away. I do remember us expelling people for subverting decisions made at the Convention they attended, still having as members most of those who the expelled said went with them, forming the Workers Party in America out of the reorganized League and new people recruited since, rebuilding links with the ex-FPM/PoWR comrades and talking about re-establishing the IWPA with them.
But then, this is about phony /b/ullshit memes, not reality. So, carry on. Don't let me interrupt your spider monkeying of Chit-Chat.

Oh, I had almost forgot that. I'm fairly sure that when one joined one was Companero, at 50 posts Guerillero, 300 was Sub-Comandante and 1000 Comandante. Redstar2000 was the only one to reach Presidente (indeed 10 000 posts) before the system was abolished.
These titles were people's user titles. Back then -- just before I joined -- there was a huge controversy because people wanted custom ones, but only some got the privilege (from CC-member and 'up', I think, but am not 100% sure).
There was actually a 'revolutionary movement' against the 'tyranny of the elitist CC', called the Rebel Alliance, which led to numerous bannings. The culmination was when a rogue tech admin called NovelGentry, against the will of Edelweiss, placed a script in the software which made it possible for the internet revolutionaries to change their usertitles into 'Rebel Alliance'.
It was perhaps the worst shitstorm in the history of Revleft, in a way quite entertaining in retrospect, but annoying for a long time -- we had to deal with the aftermath ie sockpuppets etc for ages.

Yeah, that's the reaction I get from most people when I mention it... Even the ones who don't know us (EneMe and I) from this place. To me, though, it only seems that way in retrospect. I guess it's different when you're on the inside looking out, lulz...
But him and "IBow4Che," together, was the Voltron/Captain Planet of lulz.
See, I don't really remember that about Jun and I don't remember IBow4Che all that much one way or the other. Of course, during the time period we're talking about, I posted almost exclusively in Politics anyway (about 80% of my posts were there at one point) so the Shit Chat stuff pretty well escaped me most of the time. These days I don't really have the stomach for the endless flame battles and tendency wars, so I find myself rarely popping my head out of Shit Chat and Film & Lit.

Right, I figured it was something like that. The only post total I could remember was presidente, though, probably because it seemed so astronomical. And I do remember that about RS2K.

See, I don't think there was too much of a controversy over the titles in and of themselves. Well, maybe there was, but only in the minds of the people who really, really wanted a custom title. For the most part, I think the general sentiment was that most people couldn't have given two shits one way or the other. Or, maybe I'm just projecting my own opinion on the matter onto everyone else...
Yeah, I remember that as well. I really put my foot in it concerning that very issue. I had just come back from one of my many, many protracted absences and announced it in a Chat thread.
I made an offhand remark about the Star Wars-ey nature of their titles not really knowing anything about what was going on. I was immediately flamed by about three or four of them, including one who accused me of living in a fantasy land because my custom title was "Commandante de Batallón del San Patricio," which translates as Commander of Saint Patrick's Batallion. He thought my screen name (praxis) was supposed to be the name of that commander, which to me showed his general lack of revolutionary literacy in the first place, lulz. I tried explaining that the custom title was an homage to my heritage as an Irish American (Batallón del San Patricio was the name of the brigade of Irish American soldiers who, due to religious persecution, defected into the Mexican army from the US army during the Mexican-American War). It wasn't until much later that I had learned about the "rift" and had it explained to me why Malte/Edelwiess had changed his avatar to Darth Vader's mask, lulz...

You're 100% right. I remember thinking I would never get to Comandante but I did. However now I've lost my 1000+ total because my old posts in Chit Chat and Introductions no longer count towards my post count.

I created a bit of a shitstorm when I created a poll (before you could make poll threads) about whether or not Stalinists should be banned or caged in the Socialism vs Capitalism forum. I got some nasty PMs from an admin who contacted me anonymously and called me a traitor. I won't mention who it was but it was in December of 2002 and the poll was in Jan of 03 I believe.
You can read it here http://www.revleft.com/vb/repeal-ban-stalinists-t8399/index.html?highlight=poll

In my experience they weren't for very long except for one. There was a fellow by the name of Comrade RAF who got grandfathered in, so to speak, because he was a pretty dedicated member from before the institution of the policy. In any event, the Stalin kiddies have been at the very least restricted to OI ever since I started here all those years ago.

He was a really funny guy, and I couldn't help liking him. Moreover, he also was an actual veteran from the struggles during the Cold War, ie not a 'Stalinkiddie', which is why so many had such a great respect for him despite his authoritarianism. However, during my first years here he constantly drifted towards anarchism, and actually officially announced that he was one at some point.
His later username was Vinny Rafarino. Unfortunately his rude debating style got him quite few enemies, and so he was finally banned in 07 or 08 by a very even vote of the CC, in which he was unable to defend himself as he had been removed.
The actual 'charges' can be found in the admin logs in the Members forum, but I'm too lazy to dig them up right now. They were bullshit in any case.
A real shame if you ask me.

From the link posted by Timbaly I get the impression that he creation of OI was your idea, Synthesis? Credit to you in that case -- that's what made Revleft as we know it possible.

I thought it must have been something like that. Every time I had a run in with him he was a total ass to me, so I didn't particularly care for him. I never could quite understand why so many people liked him, but it's all becoming clearer now. Kinda makes me wonder, though... Why'd he get the boot and not RS2K? I mean, I'm not saying RS should have, just that it seems a bit of a double standard, you know, given that RS had a propensity for jackassery as well. Lulz But I guess that's the rub, eh?

I see your point, but in my experience there was still a difference (even if minor) between the levels they'd go to. RAF wuld resort to another kind of flaming, for example by making comments about people's physical appearance etc -- he generally made it more personal in my view while redstar would keep it more political.
As I was one of his defenders, I did what I could to talk to RAF to tone it down for his own sake but unfortunately it didn't help.

RAF had a propensity for pissing off Rosa, so when he said something mockingly, like, "This chick thinks X..." Rosa got him banned for sexism, which spawned some stupidly long thread about whether or not the term "chick" was sexist.
On a different note, Sentinel's comment about OI did get me curious; does anyone recall when we actually started restricting people, approximately? I can't remember if people were just banned before that thread.
Finally, reviewing some of those old threads, I realize now that Stormin Norman was actually a truly epic troll, which went way over my 15-year-old head at the time.

People were restricted in the Socialism vs. Capitalism prior to my joining this board. I believe that there were no restrictions when the board started in 2001. I'm not sure when exactly restrictions began because it was obviously before my time but I believe I researched it or saw a thread where Edelweiss, Red Celtic or D DAY were discussing it.

Popularity is a good way to get away with all kinds of shit. RAF eventually lost out because he really didn't care about anyone's opinions. On the other hand, Redstar made a racist comment about Iranians, but nothing ever happened because everyone was like "Oooh redstar :redstar2000::wub:".

If I remember correctly, Led Zeppelin defended a sexist comment by Lenin against Alexandra Kollontai, and Redstar assumed it was because of his background -- which it turned out that redstar knew fuck all about except that he came from Iran.
Was it an idiotic, generalising comment? Yes. Was is racist? The CC ultimately found it not to be, after a lengthy debate -- so it's not like he just got a way with it without scrutiny.
I personally do think he should have apologised to LZ (I didn't comment as I was just admitted into the CC and still learning the drill), perhaps gotten a warning, but I disagree that the should have been removed from his admin position, or banned for it.

In all fairness, there was discussion, but I don't thin k there was a poll for serious administrative action. So I guess you can't really, ultimately, say his 'ass was on the line', but he surely was questioned and criticised fiercely, not just in the CC but on the entire board and also by people who supported him otherwise. I would have supported a poll on it, even though I'd probably only voted for a warning.
