So yesterday, in my Science class, I had a teacher, she is a HUGE Glenn Beck fan and a huge Conservative.
She was lecturing on space exploration,
and she starting to talk about NASA needing more funds from the Government.
So I raised my hand.
Bold = Teacher, Normal Font = Me:
" Yes?
Don't you think that we would get much more farther in the field of Space discovery and travel, if any nation in the world willing to contribute, pitch in to some kind of Global Space Team?
We would get very far and probably discover much more things we haven't already, but I dissaprove of this Idea.
Why is that?
Because it takes away the American Patriotic feeling that We are Number One!

What do you mean? So you're willing to slow down human progress in the name of Nationalism?
Well we can't be giving Scientific Credit to Chinese Communist Oppressors of Freedom! We can't let them beat us!
(Sigh)
Whatever. "

Yeah, and the whole point of developing rocket technology was not space exploration in the first place, but missiles. And the whole point of developing nuclear power generators was not cheap energy but nuclear weapons. Fuck NASA!

That doesn't even make any logical sense. If the Chinese and Americans worked together on an international space program, they would both be able to take the credit.

Chinese Communist Oppressors of Freedom!
Hmm let's examine that statement for the fun of it:
Chinese: adjective for something from China
Communist: someone or something that advocates communism which is the belief in a classless and stateless society
Oppressors: an authority that restricts someone
Freedom: the ability for someone to make decisions and actions without constraint
So basically she called them Chinese advocates of a classless and stateless society who restrict someone's ability to make decisions and actions for themselves. Well I can see here that your teacher needs to get an education first before giving anyone else one especially since China isn't even remotely close to socialist and even farther from communist.

Pooling resources would result in a bigger overall project with a lower cost for each participant.

And the scientists NASA used were verifiable NAZI's. Good o'l patriotism!

Where's the Wallmart that your teacher got her degree?
As for the dismissive NASA comments: for a semi-military program run by a wasteful bureaucratic apparatus, with questionable standards (the Nazi history), it has done a huge service to our entire race with its research of the last 50+ years.

But but but sharing credit with communists would make us communists too and that is unacceptable in the heart of any patriotic American. Either we succeed by ourselves or we fail by ourselves. That's the red-blooded American way. I'm sorry "red-blooded" that makes us sound like commies I actually meant blue-blooded because we actually only care about the interests of the rich and not the proletariat. Oh crap was the mic still on when I said that.... Did I mention commies r teh evil villains so says our great leader Ado-Ronald Regan.

I always HATE when one of my teachers like one or two years ago, I have bad time perception :(, said that Communism is good in theory but bad in practice because the Soviet Union fell. Naturally, she never read Marx or knew ANYTHING about either the Soviet Union or any theory in regards to Communism. Yet for some reason she was able to teach about. Worst part is I still hear some fellow students echo that saying. All of this ignorance spread by one dumb ass propaganda filled teacher. Go American education!

Space exploration is a weird thing to be nationalistic about. I've interacted with quite a few engineers who are trying to work for NASA and for the most part they just want to explore new places and further the cause of science and discovery.
I mean, the first thing I think about when I think about space is the International Space Station.

I am trying to imagine someone saying this and I just cant. You sure you aren't exaggerating a little bit?

The obvious answer is that these communists have infiltrated NASA and they are the reason for our suffering. They're obviously not Americans. :scared:

Unrelated in content but a teacher story none the less- I had a poli-sci teacher try to explain to the class about 'demonstrators' and said they just 'hop around from issue to issue because they're bored and treat it as a hobby' (she was young and had been involved in campaigns and such)
I was the only person in the class remotely politically conscious- "Perhaps it has something to do with Capitalism?"

I find it hard to believe a teacher could be so mind blowingly ignorant and blindly patriotic. Can't help but feel sorry for our US comrades stuck in an Education system stuffed with libertarian propagandists.
The most controversial thing that even came out of any of my teachers was "When I become ol' El Presidente, i'm going to line each and everyone of these corporate bastards against a wall then shoot them in the face!"... that was my BUSINESS studies teacher.

Sounds like she was projecting her own behaviour and attitudes onto others.

And if the colonisation of mars is a capitalist colonisation then the very same environmental destruction they are escaping from will be repeated.

I wonder if your poli-sci teacher has ever read the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson. The author lists numerous reasons for saying that the king was a tyrant. Shame on him -- for "hopping around from issue to issue."
because they're bored and treat it as a hobby'
Your teacher tells the class what the demonstrators' inner motivations are. That's what I call practicing psychiatry without a license.
I was the only person in the class remotely politically conscious- "Perhaps it has something to do with Capitalism?"
Capitalism spins off social problems so fast that any time people try to fix one problem many more appear. But most people will place the blame on annything BUT the one common element that is found in every city, the social system.
Hang in there. It's better that the ignorant have a few sources of information than none at all. The responsibility has fallen on us.

I'm wondering why when you suggested the USA should pool together with other countries she automatically assumed you meant China only?
Doesnt she know that Europe, Russia, Japan and India all have their own space programs with independent launch capability? Moreover doesnt she know this is ALREADY happening anyway, with the international space station?
Christ, what an ignoramous.

the USA has to work with other countries now anyway, now that the shuttle fleet has been grounded the only way to get off Earth at the moment is in a soyuz module from the baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
