Looking over the stanford philosophy page on Johann Gottfried von Herder piqued my interest in some of his thoughts, particularly his critique of human nature, enlightenment rationalism, and his almost Wittgensteinian approach to language. Although his conception of history was not materialist, did he influence Karl Marx any? Does anyone have introductory reading recommendations on Herder?

Meh, I read some stuff on Herder in a cultural studies class I took a while back. I believe he was an ardent German nationalist. If that's the case, you won't find much here.

You can find some of Herder's works at the following site, including his speculations on the origin of language: http://www.marxists.org/archive/herder/index.htm
