He never questioned Stalin's rise to power, and he played the part of useful stooge in the Bolshevisation of the PCd'I and the beuracratic seizure of power from it's left-wing majority (The left-wing of the PCd'I which, incidentally, supported Trotsky's Left Opposition). His idea of the United Front to restore democracy to Italy inspired the popular-frontism and reformism of the PCI in it's eurocommunist phase. I think it's fairly clear what side he was on.
