View Full Version : So... What do you guys call yourselfs? (Politically)

What do you guys call yourselfs, when someone would ask your political beliefs?
Surely, Anarcho-Communist isn't very straight forward. To someone.
In the end, I think I would call myself a Marxist, Although I mix in the teachings of Lenin, Marx, Guevara, Mao and a sprinkle of Trotsky(not too much).
But I would just call myself a Marxist.
What about you guys?

Either socialist or communist depending on the audience

I tend to just call myself a communist, because sometimes when you say "anarcho-communist" people need you to explain to them how anarchism (or CHAOS LOLZ) and communism (or EVIL DICTATORSHIP) are compatible.

I usually tell people I'm an anarcho-syndicalist (because I have this personality flaw called honesty) and nobody has any fucking clue what I'm talking about. I chalk that up to the widespread lack of anti-capitalist unions in the US since the end of the 1930s due to state repression and the fact that Americans are just fucking stupid, generally speaking. (A recent study showed that more Americans knew who the last winner of American Idol was than knew who the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court is.)
I personally see that as a plus and a minus. On the one hand, I almost always have a lot of explaining to do (which gets tedious), but the lack of knowledge most people have means they don't immediately judge me. On the other, I occasionally get the "the only reason you claim you believe that is nobody's ever heard of it and you're trying to make yourself sound smart/make me feel stupid " response.

I have the same, be it somewhat in reverse. Back last christmas the grandfather of my brother-in-law, which is a cool dude really, got into some political discussion with me and after I explained some of my basic positions he asked me, somewhat shocked "what, you're not a communist, are you?!" to which I replied "why yes, yes I am". The whole family (which is quite aware of my politics) had somewhat of a flabberghast and quickly exclaimed that I was certainly not a communist. It was a pretty sight to see
I knew what type of response I was probably going to get, as the man is of age and knew the horrors of the Soviet Union. And that's the problem when you say you're a communist: everyone has an idea about it and no one knows what it is. So, I did answer "yes, I'm a communist" anyway as I was trying to provoke a discussion. This didn't succeed at the evening as the discussion ended full stop, but afterwards I was told he changed his mind on the subject and said that "this boy is clearly thinking about where he stands! I respect that!".

I remember I was reading "ABCs of Anarchism" on a bus, and some guy must have been reading over my shoulder. He saw that the page headings were "what is Anarchist-communism" or whatever, and he said really incredulously:
"Anarchist-communism? That's totally hypocritical! How can you have lawless chaos and dictators in the same political ideology?!"
I told him "Well, communism is actually about having a classless, stateless society where everyday people control their own lives, not business interests. Anarchism is the same thing."
The guy replied "Well then where's my country if I'm supposed to run it then?"
I was so dumbfounded at the stupidity of his reply that I just ignored him after that.

Libertarian communist, as it is something of what is known as a 'mindfuck' in our modern parlance.
I also toss in 'De Leonite' occasionally, and on the rare occasions where I meet an anarchist here. I think one actually had a vague idea of what that was.

I am eager to dispense my own brand of justice through the dialectical method of science. Through the emancipation acquired through human knowledge I'll pick the world clean of fleas, towards a condition in which each person has the chance to consciously participate in the social organizations affecting said person to maximize potentialities.
