What was Ahmadinejad really doing in Lebanon? Is this a sign of something? Do you think he and the Lebanese government are planning somethin, or was he just visiting Lebanon to make it clear to Israel that Iran and Lebanon are allies? I have also heard some Lebanese people welcomed him as a hero, while other where more criticizing. I have also heard that an Israeli soldier said that if Ahmadinejad came in the shooting zone, they would kill him (though the Israeli vice-precident said that this was in no way the governments words).

So, though things hae been going on like the for a LONG while, what do you think will happen?

Iran has recently been placed under United Nations sanctions, and the threat of a US war has loomed large over it for more than a half decade. The Shia minority in Lebanon is one of Iran's relatively few allies in the region, so a diplomatic visit to shore up that alliance makes perfect sense. It also puts Iran in the spotlight under its own terms and not those of US or other imperialism.

I don't see that there would be some sort of nefarious reason for Ahmadinejad's visit. If you're making an accusation make it in the clear.

Not accusing him of anything, I don't think he had any particular reason either, I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

My grandparents said they saw him there giving a speech and said it was very crowded. I Think he was there to gain more support among the South Lebanese Resistance groups.

Plotting to NUKE AMERICA TO FINALLY RID THE WORLD OF FREEDOM ONCE AND FOR ALL!

I'm guessing it was just a diplomatic meeting, they happen all the time. Trying to garner up support in Lebanon and meet with a country that could be a very good ally to them (Lebanon is obviously not an ally to Israel)

I would imagine that with their being a possibility of Israel attacking Iran over the nuclear reactor business in the coming months. He is there canvassing/gathering support in case it happens.

It is just normal bourgeois politics.

What was Ahmadinejad really doing in Lebanon?

Probably trying to restore Syrian imperialism via hezbollah. Syria is a close ally of Iran and was very displeased about loosing its occupation due to (mostly) US political pressure.

If he can build up political relations with the Hezbollah against Israel, them with Palestine could be a force worth fighting together to eliminate the Zionist regime.

First, Iran already has 'political relations'. Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah general secretary, is on record as saying that Hezbollah follows Iran's leadership as a matter of principle. Iran funds Hezbollah to the tune of $60-100 million a year according to US sources, though others put the figure much higher. Iranian officials have openly stated that they have armed Hezbollah including with Zelzal 2 missiles, a heavy artillery rocket with a range of over 200km i.e. capable of hitting Tel Aviv.

Iran has firm political ties with Hezbollah already.

Iran is not thinking of "fighting together to eliminate the Zionist regime", and is certainly thinking in a much more defensive manner. Most probably one of the prime purposes of this visit is just to remind the Israelis that if they strike Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran will reply by having Hezbollah launch missiles at Israeli cities.

Personally I would imagine that the strategic planners in the Iranian military and state would be more than happy if this acted as an effective deterrent, and they didn't end up in any conflict at all, let alone one "to eliminate the Zionist regime".

Hezbollah is much closer to Iran than it is to Syria. Syria is only a fair weather friend to Hezbollah...it's recognized on both sides that it's a convenience-based alliance. Syria also proped up the Amal movement, Hezbollah's political rival.

Word is that He refused to stand behind bullet proof glass during the speech too.
