A decision on a proposal to close Minneapolis North High School, made public last weekend, might now be delayed even past November after a large and vocal contingent of the school's supporters packed Tuesday's regularly scheduled meeting of the Minneapolis School Board.
The Minneapolis Public Schools superintendent is recommending closing the last public school in north Minneapolis. Something like 5 public schools have already been shut down in the last 2 years there. We are seeing a coordinated effort by big business interests to destroy our public schools and replace them with private and for-profit charter schools.
But it is not just education, it also a process of gentrification, that we are seeing all over the country as well, particularly in other Midwestern cities like Detroit and Chicago. The racists want to reverse white flight by shutting down this school in a predominately African-American community. Although most people are renters, property value will obviously go down because there will be no schools, and it will allow the wealthy to buy out the area. This is a struggle that will be ongoing for at least the next month, when the board plans to vote on closing the school.
The main reason they cite for closing the school is lack of enrollment, however the school has no "default zone" so OBVIOUSLY enrollment would go down, and in memos that have come out, the higher ups in the school system have already been talking about "phasing out" the school for some time, so we can see their sinister planning has already been in the works and now they are trying to rush it through quickly.
At the same meeting, the board also voted to approve a $37 million new building for the school district administration.
