View Full Version : Do you grin while debating people?

I've noticed some people tend to throw on a sort of passive-aggressive shit-eating grin while in the middle of a heated discussion, usually involving politics.

To be honest, it sort of bugs me. It's like they're saying "I'm gonna pretend to acknowledge your points but I think you're dumb :)."

I can't help it sometimes. I also tend to grin (or even laugh) when I receive bad news.

I'll grin during a heated debate, but it's usually because the person I'm debating just made a mistake and I'm thinking about how they're going to get demolished.

I usually just grin instead of debating with people. Actually it's more like maniacal laughter with exaggerated exhalation after neglecting to brush my teeth. So they're like, "Blah blah hard earned profit blah blah." And then I cut in with :lol:XAXAXAXAXAXAXAXA:lol: It's usually very effective.

Sometimes I grin but it's because I thin the debate is getting really heated over something that is essentially trivial, or I think the debate is going nowhere and we're just grinding ourselves into dust, or I'm genuinely amused at how the debate is going.

I would rather have a friendly approach to a debate than seem stern and like I'm actually trying to prove the other person wrong.

Same here. Not only do I grin, but I also laugh and chortle during debates.

Bloody hell, I can't grin in debates. Debating with my friends is fucking hopeless. Today was a tirade of "cuts are necessary", "communism never worked" blah blah blah. I couldn't get a sensible word in edge-ways. Oh and also, something like

Her: didn't the communists torture loads of people?
Me: err what exactly do you mean?
Her: oh wait, but is Russia still communist?
Me: no.... anyway, the US and CIA are notorious for torturing thousands upon thousands of innocent people
Her: yeah but they only do it to the bad guys

And also taking the piss out of my political activism because, firstly, they seem to think everyone in the party is my age and below (i.e. being a Marxist means your views are idealistic or immature) and secondly that because the party membership is ~2000 we are insignificant and a failure.

All my discussions look like this:

It's only partially related to this thread, but I wanted to take the opportunity to show people this great site: http://logicien.fr/rhetorique.html

Thing is, there's a difference between a friendly "this debate is all in good fun" grin and a passive-aggressive "I'm obviously superior to you and your persistence irritates me" grin. I don't exactly know how, but I can usually tell which one is being used. Maybe it's the show of teeth...

Yeah, me too. It's like I don't know how to react so I just grin or laugh, even though it's inappropriate.

That's how monkeys show aggression. If a chimp starts grinning at you, you better gtfo.

I do that a lot to people I loathe, I say "that would be a really good point, if only it made sense". Say it to the wrong person you'll get your head kicked in.

I feel your pain, it happens to me and some of my friends too. Though I do laugh my ass off each time they do say things like that, but about Anarchism. Makes me burst into tears of laughter sometimes.

Deal with it trot.My patience would have to be impeccable. The "debate", if you wanna call it that, was basically just 6 very immature people shouting stuff at me.
