I'm pretty sure there were/was a couple of threads (maybe just one) about the Chilean Miners on here.

To be fair, the Chilean miners are not the only REAL WORKERS and whilst it has obviously been a trial of endurance for them, this isn't really what we mean by "workers struggles".

Well still, these workers endured 70 days 650 meters below earth's surface. They deserve respect, and if we didn't mention that whose going to, and we may as well praise their president who to me seemed like working hard to get them, and supervising the operation personally!

I don't think there's anyone on here who does'nt respect them, but it's all over the TV and newspapers. They have'nt been forgotten, whereas a lot of peoples struggles have and maybe we should be concentrating on them.

Oh, fuck off!!

So the president gets to look good in front of the international media, by "saving" a few miners, who they took way too long to respond to in the first place. And meanwhile he gets to carry on the same neoliberal lagacies and policies of Pinochet!

Such as these very mining projects that put the workers' lives at risk and steal the land from the mapuche people!

They won't. Well, the ones who were stuck will be fine, they've got book and film deals streaming in.

However today news has started to come out about the plight of those that weren't trapped who, as the mine was obviously shut down, are now facing severe financial problems. One miner has had to make his living by taxiing reporters and journalists around - now he doesn't even have that.

There were at least two threads in the Politics forum about Chile. Virtually every leftwing newspaper and website has at least one article about it already. But the focus of the discussion has been the right one: the horrific conditions caused by Pinochet's privatization of the mines, and the fact that the brother of Chile's current president, Piñera, was the labor and mining minister during the dictatorship, and was responsible for implementing the privatization plan that directly led to what happened at the "slaughterhouse San Esteban".

We could get into the natural capitalist tendency to let workers suffer the consequences of their money saving cut backs. The way to get wealthy is to have people working for you who consume far less of the profits than you do. So even with safety regulations they will be exploited in as many other ways as possible. Maybe they won't be trained properly or able to afford enough food to keep vigilant or they will have to work too many hours or too many jobs in order to pay for a place to live... All of those things will be overlooked as safety risks especially in mainstream media.
What about the miners a number of years back that were bulldozed into the gold mine in Tanzania under the oversight of Canadian Sutton Resources? it essentially went unreported and/ or entirely blamed on police...

All that said, I would like to see more Leftist and Anarchistic groups taking initiative and just start helping out (adding a little press coverage wouldn't hurt either). The trick then is getting the willing members to the sight - I'd go but simply can't afford it alone... Does anybody know of groups that are willing to help organize left or anarchist guerrilla worker support/ aid missions?

Enough has been said proving the rashness of your statement but just to add... Why didn't you start a thread about it? You are just as capable so don't try to unnecessarily guilt trip us if you are just as guilty.
