Since I got tired of reading all threads about Stalin vs Trotsky, I thought we should have a little variety.

So, what is the legitimate brand of Islam? Shia or Sunni?

And no, we don't accept ant "all religions suck"-replies.

I Take A Third Option (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TakeAThirdOption) and go for Sufism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufism) instead. :D

Sufism is really not a third option, and is existent within all branches of Islam. Moreover, it is a myth that Sufism should be a kind of "peaceful Islam". A lot of the most radical Jihadis have been Sufis. The peace which Sufis are talking about is an absence of negative emotions stopping you from reaching Allah.

The Ahmadi school though, seems genuinely more peaceful.

the ''real branch'' if there is any is probably sunni beccause its more spiritual than the shia sect. Some people seem to have extented the myth further with shia.

I was under the distinct impression that it was (or at least could be) a distinct current within Islam, although obviously much smaller than the big two.

I didn't mention anything about peaceability. I just wanted to break your arbitrarily binary choice without breaking the terms of your OP. :p

Sufism, as Dimento said, crosses both of the major branches of Islam. Today in most, but not all, Islamic countries it is associated with far right politics.

Most Muslims would consider Ahmadiyya to be outside of Islam.

Ali is obviously the only legitimate successor of Mohammed appointed by Allah. Anyone who says otherwise is a heretic and a infidel.

It's not very important...

Religiously, I ignore sects..

But Politically I would have to go with Shia Islam.

The Shia's throughout history have been the more proletariant, and revolutionary.

We were among the first to carry Red Flags symbolizing Bloodshed and Struggle.

The Shia's have been the most oppressed Muslims in history.

Which is why, in Countries like Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan o r Egypt, or almost anywhere in the Middle East (besides Iran),

Most Communist party's are majority Shia, or run by a Shia, or at the least, come from a Shia family.
