I hated the film. I don't even remember exactly why, as its been several years since I saw it, but I was extremely disappointed with it. She had a pretty intense and interesting life, and it seemed to me that the movie was focused mainly on her sex life, presumably because Salma Hayek with a unibrow having lotz of sex/relationships would make more money than Salma Hayek with a unibrow making lots of super insane paintings. Which I wouldn't have particularly minded had it not come at the expense of a lot of much more interesting things about her life that were totally ignored.
But I'd have to watch it again to give a more coherent critique, because my memory is fukt.

They insinuated, in the film, that Trotsky was found by Stalin only because Diego Rivera was jealous of the relationship Trotsky and Frida had. That he gave up Trotsky's location to Stalins goons. On a positive note- at least they didn't make communists look totally shitty as most Hollywood films do. They could have focused more on the politics but I guess the focus, as you said was first sex and then art. I guess sex is more 'entertaining'?
