Eight gay-hating Bronx (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/The+Bronx) gangbangers accused of one of the city's most savage crimes in years appeared in court Sunday to face charges in what Mayor Bloomberg (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Michael+Bloomberg) called an act of "pure evil."
They stand accused of torturing and terrorizing a gay man, his older brother, and two teenagers over the course of many hours Oct. 3 in Morris Heights (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Morris+Heights).
"Is it true you're a fag?" ringleader Idelfonso (Cheto) Mendez allegedly demanded of his bound victims before punching them in the face.
Prosecutors said he repeated the query and the punch over and over again.
The eight were hit with a slew of charges including gang assault, sexual assault, robbery, weapons possession and hate crimes. The gang assault count alone is enough to put them away for 25 years.
None of the defendants - Mendez, 23; Elmer Confresi (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Elmer+Confresi), 23; David Rivera (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/David+Rivera), 21; Bryan Almonte (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Bryan+Almonte), 17; Steven Caraballo (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Steven+Caraballo), 17; Nelson Falu (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Nelson+Falu), 17; Denis Peitars (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Denis+Peitars), 17; and Brian Cepeda (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Brian+Cepeda), 16, all of the Bronx - entered pleas.
They are due back in court Oct. 14. Only Peitars and Caraballo were offered the chance to post $50,000 cash bail.
A ninth suspect, Rudy Vargas-Perez (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Rudy+Vargas-Perez), 22, remained at large.
"Given how much we know, we'll get him," Bloomberg said.
Speaking at East Ward Baptist Church in Harlem (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Harlem), the mayor on Sunday called the attack "pure evil."
"Their heinous crime, I think, is matched only by their warped mindsets," he said.
"Over the past few days, I've kept asking myself, 'how can one human be so inhuman to another, simply on the basis of who they are?' What kind of twisted logic really spurs them - a large group of men - to show their 'toughness' by ganging up on helpless individuals?
"That's not showing your toughness, that's just telling you you're weak and despicable."
Members of a penny-ante crew calling themselves the Latin King Goonies, the defendants are accused of a depraved rampage that began at 3 a.m. on Oct. 3, after learning a 17-year-old wannabe recruit had been seen with a 30-year-old gay man.
In the abandoned three-story house at 1910 Osborne Place, they used as a clubhouse - and turned into a makeshift torture chamber - they allegedly stripped the boy naked, beat him, slashed him with a box cutter and sodomized him with a plunger handle.
That evening, a second 17-year-old was tied up in the house and interrogated about his relationship the 30-year-old man.
They then allegedly lured the older man to the house, stripped him, tied him to a chair and forced the 17-year-old to hit him in the face and burn his genitals with cigarettes as they jeered.

I'm surprised the mayor is speaking out against this. I didn't think he'd give two shits. One day these assholes will get what's coming to em.

Utter fucking scum.

Reading about what they inflicted on their victims one gets an odd suspicion that these guys sort of... got off - so to speak - on the torture.

How horrible, this is like a horror movie or something.

Meanwhile...

NEW YORK — Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino told Orthodox Jewish leaders on Sunday he doesn't want children "brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality" is acceptable.

If there can be any kind of bright side to this, coming right on the heels of the college student who killed himself, this could maybe help turn a corner on gay rights. With the movement from Prop 8 in sort of a limbo, maybe this tragedy can help create a sense of immediacy to activists and the general population.

I kinda understand the motivation or the immediacy of the "It gets better" campaign but I also still really really hate it. That's the liberal's answer to gay-bashing and homophobia? "Sit through it, it'll stop for you at sometime" or how about "Homophobia: it can't last for you forever" or maybe: "It gets better... or you get killed in an abandoned building (either way because what can you do?)"

Nauseating, both the attacks and Paladino's remarks coming right after this. Of course now he's whining about it all being "out of context" and how he totally understands because his nephew is gay. And then he went into bigot mode again and delivered this:

"I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family," he said.

Up the community patrols- if the police are ineffective and not patrolling your area do it yourself. I understand my own position on police but our communities need some sort of protection- the police can't seem to do this without committing crimes themselves.

Stand up and fight back.
