View Full Version : Old vs New Marxism? What's different?

This may be more a "Theory" question, I think it (and I) are noobie enough to be asked here. :)

So, I learned about Marxist theory only within the last few years, and mainly from one grad school English prof (who I considered my mentor). But he passed away not long ago.

Most of what he taught me was in conjunction with the Frankfurt School and Critical Theory -- so I know a lot of what he taught was couched in what I've come to understand as "old Marxism". For example, he often talked of the base/superstructure dichotomy, and only a couple of times made caveats that Marxism has moved away from that somewhat.

So, I have little-to-know idea just how much of what (think I) understand of Marxist theory is old vs. new.

Is there a good primer for comparing and contrasting the two versions so that I can take stock of what I learned and update what I may have old and discredited ideas of?

Thanks!
