I watched a clip on youtube about catalonia, it was taken from a documentary series I think. Anyway the clip briefly mentioned that in parts of catalonia money was replaced with a voucher system, does anyone know were I could find out more about the system they used? If they did use it at all. Thanks

They pretty much used them, by what the video says. I think in The Spanish Civil War by Anthony Beevor, he talks about it. I'm sure if you do a Google search or something, you'll find what you're looking for. I just don't think anyone's really put any thought into writing about it?

The workers in many places in republican Spain, following the 18 July rising, set up their own local committees on food, security, and the war effort; but also many more. These were organized in many areas by both CNT and UGT members. In Catalonia and Aragon, the CNT was mainly in charge, and collectivization was basically imposed on the petty bourgeois, in other parts of Spain, because of the moderate-UGT influence, many small holders were allowed to continue personal cultivation. This in turn, led to a black market and profiteering that undermined the collective system. I have also heard of these 'vouchers.' But they mostly happened in very rural small communities, as far as I can gather. Too many sources Ive read from that era describe using la peseta in cities like Barcelona, Taragona, etc; even in the fall of 36 and throughout 37. So, I dont think Barcelona saw the use of vouchers on a major scale. I could be wrong.

These collectives were by the 1 April 1939, under PCE/Comintern (and thus Moscow) subjugation. They essentially seized to exist, replaced with bureaucratic Valencia-approved government panels.
