I've recently realized that many people don't care about communism simply because they don't think about it. It just never comes up in their daily lives.

So in order to at least make people think about the possibility of communism, what if a leftist organization pooled some money together to have a 'commercial' aired that sort of puts the idea in people's heads, and maybe attempts to discredit ideas about Obama being socialist and such.

Do you think this could work? How much impact do you think it would have? What should it include?

ps: I put this in chit-chat, because nobody goes into P&P.

That's the role of paper sales and most forms of activism. Perhaps there is a need for a leftwing version of Democracy Now!

So where can we find this capitalist TV network that would be willing to air a communist ad?

With enough money, anywhere.

I definitely think that the left needs to branch out into more mediums. The paper and the leaflet are old news, what about the internet? New media?

What the left could really benefit from is media students and marketing students, as strange as that may sound.

Viral videos, blogs, podcasts...what have you.

I agree with Laird, papers and leaflets are old news, it isn't the 1930s anymore. Plus with basically free online exposure, we'll avoid that old gripe that the "COMMUNISTS are SELLING stuff!'

The internet, especially in the west, has a huge penetration in the population. In the Netherlands for example, some 90+% of all households have internet access. It is for that reason alone a real proletarian communication medium, be it with clear defined limits. So I agree in general, but think that printed media still has some role, for example a magazine could still be very much a useful tool.

Also, in the third world the internet is still not that widespread, so printed media can still be way more effective.

Yeah, lol.

It would be interesting to know which would advance the communization further - airing a TV commercial, doing something to prevent televisions from functioning, or blockading a highway with burning TVs.

Trotsky said in a text in the 30s that with the strong support of the marketing and publicity mediums, something like communism could become widespread and accepted with fews or no shot fired.

this is even more true these day with the wide range of media avaliable.

They wouldn't even let AdBusters run ads. They certainly wouldn't let actual communists.

Well, my thought is, sure we have all this stuff on the internet, but people don't generally see it unless they actually look for it. There are just so many people that simply never think about politics enough to even consider communism. But if those people were watching like Desperate Housewives or some shit, and then Boom, some commercial is ramming communism down their throats like it was Oxyclean, they would at least have it on the mind for a little while. Not to mention what Jay Leno and the gang would have to say about it.
