View Full Version : I would like to boycott corporations supporting Middle East occupation

Is anyone privy on which corporations support occupations of Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan? Yes, I know that capitalism is evil in and of itself, but I can't stand to profit industries with a shared responsibility in killing men, women and children.

I have no clue, as that would require a sort of overview over how different companies are connected to each other, especially how various companies are related to the arms industry (the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor had a diagram explaining the music industries ties to arms manufacturers on one of their albums, IIRC), etc., which I would love to have, but I didn't really bother to do research and create one, and afaik no one did (a comprehensive) one yet.

You can google for "boycott Israel" to find lists of Israel-supporting corporations. Though these lists are usually by right-wingers and/or conspiracy nuts.

Other than that, hm... maybe you can find some info by searching around on corporate watch (http://www.corpwatch.org/)?

Not that I am saying you shouldn't do such a thing, but you realise that boycotts by individuals do not tend to do much. Don't you?

Unless your boycott is part of a broader publicised boycott with lots of people, it won't change the companies attitude or buying practices (or much else). This is because the company can't know why you aren't buying their stuff. And even if you do send them a letter explaining that you won't be, it will just get tossed without reaching upper management.

Though I don't think boycott is a very strategic way to stop human rights abuses in Palestine.

You mean like this? (http://bdsmovement.net/)

Who Profits (http://www.whoprofits.org/) is a good resource, run by the Coalition of Women for Peace. A good thing to do is look out for "made in Israel", the first few letters of the UPC (anything starting in "729" is made in Israel), and since Israel has a large high tech industry, be conscious of what's in your consumer electronics.

see Hampshire College and UC Berkley attempts at institutional divestment, the former successfully, the latter not.

Boycott capitalism because it is always looking for new markets and the 'Muslim (or middle eastern) market' has yet to be 'tapped'. Millions upon millions of potential McDonald's customers. Cheap oil sold in US dollars helps as well. War is not only a racket it's how capitalism stays fluid/ever expanding/viable.

Did you know how the US opened up Japan for capitalist markets? Pre WW1 we brought our entire NAVY to their shores and told them to westernize (go capitalist/open up markets for trade) or be destroyed. Sounds familiar egh?

Also boycotting all of these companies is rather difficult (intel for example controls the majority of the processor market I personally preferred AMD from the start but I know why I prefer AMD ), but I say go for it. Even if you can't boycott all of them try to take most of them out of the equation every little bit helps.
