On the BBC World Service's "The Interview", the show's host/interviewer is just tearing into Father "Burn a Qur'an" Jones in Florida. If you can, take a listen.

The Brits are freer to be more critical of religion than us colonials, mired in superstition as we are. The fundies get way to much of a free ride here. We can't criticize anyone's "faith community" now can we.

Fuck that. I'd picket a church if I knew it would be for a good reason.

Sweet girl that I am,

Its 28 minutes, but definitely worth it. The interviewer starts off gradually, lets the moron speak for about 4 min and then very diplomatically exposes him for the provincial, reactionary, ignorant buffoon that he is.He shows the most effective way of arguing with Christian fundamentalists, using their own arguments against them. He tears apart Jones homophobic cherry picking of Leviticus, his near total ignorance of Islam (a religion he wrote a book about but knows nothing of), his race baiting, the contradictions inherent in his extreme fundamentalism, and his ignorance of, well..almost everything. Jones was chock full of howlers.

My guess he doesn't actually believe in his own Islamophobia but adopted it as a cheap publicity stunt. It worked, for a time, but Jones obviously isn't bright enough to get anymore mileage out out of it.

The guy is a babbling lunatic.

I don't know if I'd say that. He's just a fundamentalist demagogue. Every fucking answer he doesn't know, he just goes straight to, "Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ, sir." It's an easy way out.

I'm not that impressed. He missed so many opportunities to nail the idiot to the ground. The part where he mentions the scripture was nice, though.

I think that just letting the guy try and justify his theories was enough to discredit him. There was hardly any argument to be dismantled, from all I can gather, Jones' line of reasoning was that 'Islam is bad, for reasons I'm gonna pull out of my ass'.

I agree. There are always going to be dumb asses who believe shit like this. We can't do anything about that. But to any rational person, the guy made himself out a moron. Anyway, I think the interviewer did a pretty good job of demonstrating that Jones couldn't find his ass with two hands and a compass. I mean, he actually got him to admit that he'd only ever had two years of college, that he didn't know that much about the Bible and knew absolutely nothing about Islam. It was also pretty funny hearing that the guy's congregation had diminished by 40%... Something tells me that if the other 60% hears this a bunch of them are going to leave as well.

Terry Jones: "We never imagined that we would get such media attention."

In saner times, they wouldn't have. The level of serious media and political attention (the President of America!) this man with his 50 followers received was the really strange aspect of this whole thing, much stranger than this loony pastor himself.

Yeah, the media shouldn't have made such a thing out of him. He got what he wanted.

They need to make more mention of people like this guy....
