I was going to say this on the last thread: the difference between a "nice guy" and a "bad boy" is a few drinks. I don't get why some guys self-identify as the poor, pitiful "nice guy" who never gets a look in.

Uhm, I obviously can't speak for everyone, but "nice guy" is not really a label I invented for myself, it's what girls stated as their reasons for rejecting me: "I really like you and you look good, but you're not like guys should be because you do / don't do X and that's why I don't want to be with you", "You're too nice and I really like you, but being together with you would just ruin everything", etc.

Nice guys still win in the end.

I'm not an asshole, but I'm not somebody who is easily stepped on either. If I like someone I will work tirelessly for them, but I also expect loyalty and warmth in return. if a girl does not want this then she is not worth my time...

i mean, yeah, at times my own humanity has caused me grief, but that's what life in general is all about. I'm not going to be a jerk just because it attracts girls, it's just not me.

also, speaking from experience, tons of girls have defended me when my 'friends' would try to knock me down a peg in order to impress them.

WARNING: About half way through I go off on what amounts to, basically, a tangent on what I consider to be my major flaws. I think I got a bit carried away because I lovemaking lists and picking at people's flaws. I kept it in because I'm fairly sure it helps illustrate what I'm talking about, plus I found it funny in a slightly dark way.

Lol sorry what? All I saw you posting were subtle implications that I'm a misogynist. I was trying hard not to directly reference you because I don't actually think you are a misogynist. The "nice guy" narrative, however, is one generally acknowledged to be steeped in misogyny much of it arising from the supposedly "nice" guys' sense of entitlement.

I'm not arguing that women don't select partners in a similar manner as men. In fact, as I perceive it, you are the one arguing that by saying that women don't prefer men that fit the socially established gender stereotype of what a man should be like. Unless of course, you would argue that men don't do this either. Again, when I use "men" and "women", I'm obviously generalizing - that means that the virtual majority of individuals I know in those groups act the way I described, not that they are a homogeneous mass or that it's impossible for others to have made contradicting experiences. People select partners based on a series of criteria that do include established gender norms for their preferred gender, I've not denied this. The idea, though, that nice guys are so significantly divorced from typical gender norms that this is the reason they aren't selected as partners (rather than, say, the fact a lot of people who identify themselves as nice guys are creepy, clingy weirdos with a massively off putting sense of entitlment.)

Is social isolation, to various degrees not a disadvantage? Okay, it's obviously not nearly as crass as what patriarch systems do to women, I give you that much. Two things. Firstly, not getting laid isn't "social isolation" by any stretch of the imagination. Social isolation is when you have no or very few friends and rarely spend time interacting in a meaningful way with other people, after any significant length of time in genuine social isolation you would wish fervently and daily that your social problems amounted to something as insignificant as whether or not you have a boy/girlfriend. Secondly it's obvious that no one is socially isolated for not being a misogynist prick - in some social circles in fact they would be actively shunned for being misogynist pricks.

Is it my flaw that I don't do things culturally viewed as suitable for males/that I do things viewed as socially unacceptable for guys? That's a pretty pro-establishment attitude if you ask me: "Deviation is bad." I'm not really in a position to tell you want your flaws are but I somehow doubt you're deviating so immensely from the masculine stereotype that it's the root of all your problems.

I don't think you're getting me though. To use myself as example, I am currently single and look to be that way for quite some time, I've been rejected more times than most people have had hot dinners (sometimes devastatingly and by people I don't imagine I could get over in a month of sundays). I even, at one stage, decided it was because I'm a "nice guy" (and I am generally quite nice, although I do have a bit of a temper and am inclined to say hurtful things without really considering the offense given) and read all the various online nice guy manifestos although I never got to the stage of dressing it all up in feminist rhetoric. It was only when I had to reject someone [for a host of reasons none of them really to do with her failing to conform to gender stereotypes IIRC] that it dawned on me that there may be other reasons more to do with my multifarious flaws than any malice on other peoples' part, for example:

I'm built like Jack Skellington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Skellington) after a particularly harsh diet, which is an unattractive look for anyone.
I'm unemployed, have no formal qualifications above A/S level (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GCE_Advanced_Level) and live with my family. Which marks me out as a definite liability.
I'm prone to, and suffer from, some mental health conditions related to depression and social anxiety, meaning building a relationship with me takes quite some work.
I more than likely have an autistic spectrum disorder, and if not I sure do behave like it, which means again that anyone who wants to build a relationship with me has an uphill struggle with it.
I'm smoker and everyone knows that smokers are jokers.

...and that's without getting into flaws that aren't readily apparent [for example my sexual appetite would be dwarfed by all but the most staid of partners]. See, if someone as awesome as I am can have such a multitude of flaws unrelated to male gender stereotypes (and some which are like being a heavy drinker) or being a "nice" guy then it's quite likely you do too.

Oh right, because quoting my post and talking about "leftists" in the third person totally doesn't leave room to infer that you're in fact talking about me. You're not the first person to have these views. As I said earlier I'm not trying to attack you personally.

3rd October 2010, 20:49
The problem with "nice guys" rhetoric is that their tastes in women generally don't fall too far from the norm. So they expect women to shun all conformity, without scrutinizing their own sense of taste. Thus, nice guys generally have a number of dating options that they don't consider good enough for them based on their own normative tastes in women. These women might be a bit homely, maybe a little overweight, or have some other trait that devalues women in our society. And these women sit at home and wonder why men, even nice guys, always go for the same type of women.

Could you explain what you mean by "sense of entitlement"?

Uhm... I do have few or no friends IRL, I rarely spend time interacting in a meaningful way with others IRL, I have never in my life had a girlfriend, I have had people I barely know (for whatever reason though, mostly girls) hate on me, insult me and talk me down for reasons beyond my knowledge.

I'm not really in a position to tell you want your flaws are but I somehow doubt you're deviating so immensely from the masculine stereotype that it's the root of all your problems.

It may not be now, but I do think it was major part of what put me in my current situation. I wouldn't be a depressed, socially awkward basement dweller with massive confidence issues if not for the past couple of rejections, happening for more or less exactly that reason. The last girl even in detail explained to me how I fail to be 'manly' and that for exactly that reason she couldn't be with me even though she admittedly wanted to at some point - she argued her self esteem would suffer from it if she was with someone like me.

I don't think you're getting me though. To use myself as example, I am currently single and look to be that way for quite some time, I've been rejected more times than most people have had hot dinners (sometimes devastatingly and by people I don't imagine I could get over in a month of sundays). Your right, I didn't know where you are coming from. Thanks for sharing that, I think I see your point now. However, I still would argue that some of things you're stating as your flaws, especially the "social anxiety" and "autistic spectrum disorder" could lead to behaviors perfectly fitting the 'nice guy' stereotype, for example shyness.

You're not the first person to have these views. As I said earlier I'm not trying to attack you personally.

Ok. I'm sorry for being so aggressive. It's just that I have massive personal issues (mostly expressed in depression) because of this, and people for whatever reason keep telling me I'm wrong, or that I don't really have any issues, or some other derogatory "you're not worth being taking serious" crap. Which really just makes me feel even shittier.

I'm not threatening you, cretin.

Big bold ADMIN lettering is always intimidating. :blushing:

Have you considered they're just trying to let you down gently because they do, in fact, genuinely like you as a friend and it's not all part of a sinister conspiracy to prevent nice guys from having relationships.

I obviously don't expect you to know about the times I've been rejected, but believe me, not all of them were exactly gentle and some of them were extremely specific, especially my last one, from which I still carry a good dose of self-hatred, insecurities and depression around with me.

Thus, nice guys generally have a number of dating options that they don't consider good enough for them based on their own normative tastes in women. These women might be a bit homely, maybe a little overweight, or have some other trait that devalues women in our society. Doesn't apply to me, again, I can't talk about others.

I think it's about Ecuador. It is indeed heartening that almost all different groups instinctively know how to respond to plain old military putschists and their tiny minority of "left" defenders. If the latter are really so proud of being isolated in supporting a thoroughly reactionary cause, then of course they are at liberty to do so.

Personally, I think they're just being a bunch of nice guys.

-People who talk about how Lenin was authoritarian often like Bakunin, who wanted society to be transformed by a conspiracy led by him and his buddies (literally).

-People who talk about how authoritarian Lenin was often like Nestor Makhno, who ran a conscripted army that constantly wrought havoc in Mennonite villages and against opposition. Aka, they acted like Bolsheviks acted towards kulaks. But Bolsheviks were authoritarian, but Makhno wasn't cuz freedom.

-People who hate authoritarianism like Spanish anarchists, who forcibley collectivized land and executed religious leaders without trial and destroyed churches. This apparently is not authoritarian because of the civil war, but when Bolsheviks do stuff like that, it's an example of the horrors of totalitarianism.

-People who like Bakunin don't worship his very word in a Führer-esque, person-cult'ish manner. They have also expressed disagreement with him on various times.

Anarchists do recognize this as wrong though, and they can, because they don't draw their whole ideological apparatus from the life of one infallible deity, unlike Leninists.

edit: nvm lol I can't get +rep for sectarianism in this forum :/

No, they clearly don't recognize it as wrong, at least on this site (I don't see why they would, but it's hypocritical for them to think that when anarchists do something it's aight but when Bolsheviks do it it's unacceptable). I don't see why they would say it was wrong. And I don't identify as a Leninist (though I like Lenin and the Bolsheviks, and might be a bit of a crypto-Leninist lol), but in defense of them, that's a stereotype that's just as dumb as saying that all anarchists hate leadership.

And forcibly collectivizing land isn't wrong, especially in the context of a civil war. We're not libertarian "voluntaryists".

I don't know about anarchists, but I think randomly executing ppl and destroying churches is wrong. I never said all the things you posted were wrong either. I'm not hypocritical either, at least not that I'm aware, not counting my deliberately over-the-top attacks on Leninists for sectarian lulz purposes, of course, but I disagree with quite a lot of what happened in the USSR under Lenin, the Bolsheviks or those in Lenin's legacy.

1845 is slightly better than ESB, from what I can remember. My least favourite Fullers beer is there most popular, London Pride, however I think my dislike of it is mostly down to have so many bady poured pints of it in pubs.

Bilan - I've had Birra Moretti a number of times. It's not bad, but my favourite beer tends to come from England, Belgium and sometimes Germany. I've often found beer from most other places (with a number of notable exceptions) to be quite plain and boring. I'm now so used to ale that can taste like coffee, biscuit, wood and fruit in a single mouthful that the clean and refreshing tastes of things like Birra Moretti and Peroni don't really excite me.

But then should any beer really excite me?

Even if what you said is true. It's not your fault, being located in a place where tall people have to duck to avoid solar flares means that having room temperature beers on tap is just impractical. That and being fucking miles from europe means you can't import much so things like Guinness are brewed under license, usually to an inferior quality (although nothing is quite as inferior, in fact undrinkable, as Guinness brewed in Nigeria). I'm sure you guys have some decent beers of your own but the only ones you seem to send over here (or let us brew in Newcastle) are the piss ones (Castlemaine and bloody Fosters).

Furthermore I'm in series danger of bursting into overtures on the immense value of common sense because, like most twatty dullards, I can't confine myself to a single boorish, petty opinion that could be overlooked or dismissed as an aberration but have, instead, to shower you in a constant shower of meaningless platitudes and justification for my own thoughtless oafishness."

Well, I think you're right. Dichotomies tend to be reductive. But I don't see how it follows that all dichotomies result from cartesian dualism.

Also, I would contest that it is primarily eurocentric. The Buddhist idea of yin and yang is the most obvious example I can think of.

Jesus christ but it's easy to get into arguments in this thread.

Anyway, don't give me that toss about "talking like a normal person" not only is it creating a stupid dichotomy (that is between people who aren't offensive tossers and "normal people"), which is hilarious given you've now posted in strong terms against thinking in dichotomies. The concept that it's talking like a normal person immediately excludes any groups targeted by such language from the category of normal, making them easily dismissible as a rabble of subnormals with thin skin which has the highly attractive advantage of meaning you don't have to put one bloody ounce of thought into anything you say. It does also give you a handy excuse to consume media without having to think critically about it because the whole toxic mass of it is obviously exempt from criticism because it's "normal".

I'm not saying "don't listen to hip-hop", but surely it's not beyond you to consider the lyrics in more than a cursory manner. I still watch things like, say, South Park but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm in full agreement with the writers or the language they use - and that is of course the same with music artists and so on. Honestly though when someone in a song or whatever calls someone a "faggot" without even the veneer of irony to justify it I just kind of cringe like when your mum says a pub's decour looks "a bit gypo" or your uncle tells you about a really good dish he got from the"chinky."

Honestly though, avoiding talking like an arsehole is not a massive imposition on you or your freedom of speech. At least no more so than the social convention of, for example, saying "please" when you order a pint; it's just a bit of consideration the absence of which causes unpleasantness and in extreme cases being barred from the pub.

As if every time you criticise someone's language you've immediately become unable to do anything else. It's bollocks. There's more than enough hours in the day. Also defining people by their normalacy carries connotations whether you wish to recognise them or not, it's the reason (for example) that people use(d) 'queer' as an insulting term for gay people.

Well, I think you're right. Dichotomies tend to be reductive. But I don't see how it follows that all dichotomies result from cartesian dualism.

Also, I would contest that it is primarily eurocentric. The Buddhist idea of yin and yang is the most obvious example I can think of.

I haven't been a Buddhist for very long, but I'm 99% sure that the concepts of yin and yang are Taoist.

EDIT: Yes, Taoist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_and_yang

And not only that, but they aren't mutually exclusive, but interconnected. So not a dichotomy.

But we're together again, and all that is in the past. My only qualm is that as of yet, I haven't gotten any official response from you as to why you had to leave.
