It can be quite a lonely experience knowing about a really great band but not knowing anybody who has heard about them. To start this thread off I want to talk about a group called Hickey who I first encountered on an excellent music blog called Cosmic Hearse (http://cosmichearse.blogspot.com/), run by the bands former drummer (who presently drums for Agalloch and Ludicra). They're described on wikipedia as "melodic punk", a slightly silly description when you consider the influences on their music (hardcore, black metal, noise, post-punk), however it's true that even during their most outre moments there was a catchy tune behind the noise. It kind of shocks me how much they sound like a lot of those bands that emerged from that LA venue The Smell a couple of years ago (No Age in particular) and some of those shitgaze (serious genre) bands like Psychedelic Horseshit (serious name).

Someone kindly uploaded some of their tunes to youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25qqd-oKQhY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t17FN2zHI68

There are a few more if you look and you can get most of their record stuff on the blog linked above ^.

So yeah, any Hickey fans? And what bands do you feel alone in loving?

Bent Outta Shape. Not super-obscure or anything, but they crafted one of the greatest albums of this decade. Imagine the angst of the replacements and filter it through infectious and original sing-along punk music and you have BOS.

Sadly, the vocalist died a few years ago. :/

I've seen them once or twice (I kinda forget). They're a good pop-punk band.

Same with the lead vocalist of Hickey, unfortunately, who overdosed on heroin.

Here is a memorial post that features a little BPP reference:

I'm probably the only person in the world who listens to these guys, but whatever. They're okay - be warned, though: they are very obscure. It would've been nice if they could've made it big before members started dying, but oh well:

I don't listen to much stuff that I would consider obscure (although to people who only listen to Top 40 it probably would be), but:

Stars of the Lid. Great ambient drone group, like Sigur Ros on acid.

Local hipsters and garage-punks know and love them, but I don't think people outside the Bay Area or these sub-genres know about them:

Other people may know him, but he's still fairly obscure. Sometimes have to get past the confusion of hist post-anarchistic lyrics, but he's a genius of a wordsmith in all honesty. Love him!

Fovea Hex
Ambient, with a austere yet surreal mood. Has some folky acoustic elements, I think Robert Fripp contributes with some guitar, and female vocals (not Robert Fripp's).

The best stuff from the record I've heard (Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent) isn't on Youtube, but here's one song I found:

Yeah, I'm familiar with Fovea Hex :). I have Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent and I should probably listen to it a bit more.

I like Frank Turner, but I preferred him when he was still Anarchist:

I feel I know too many relatively obscure bands to pick one :/ Though some of them are likely only obscure to non-Germans.

One of my favorite German bands, Kurhaus (anarchist/straight edge hc/p-hc):

Ah, I will have to dig deeper then to stay true to topic.

Morose
Unfortunately I haven't got an album of them but I have heard some songs from different places on the net, and they have impressed me. Italian atmospheric and melancholic 'cold acoustic folk'. I think there is also a black metal band with this name, which might be good but I haven't heard it.
