Lenin at Trotsky were straightedge but the others? Here's Karl Radek. I mean, c'mon, you can't say he didn't make a pit stop in the Netherlands when he wasn't shuttling between Germany and Russia.

You know, I actually wonder what the prevalence of cannabis consumption was in the USSR - if I remember correctly, it was geographically next door to some prime growing areas and I reckon there are plenty of places within its borders where it can be grown naturally.
How hard would it be to obtain reliable data?

What I've come up with is that cannabis wasn't used much in Russia until the 90s. It did have a presence in the Central Asian republics, don't know to what extent.
Jah Division, a Russian reggae band. The singer is Gera Moralez, whose father Leopoldo Moralez was a Cuban revolutionary who fought with Che.

Cuba, Cuba, cubana
Legalize Marijuana
I feel sadness for Cuba
Aged Fidel with silver beard
Sunny socialism
The ghost of the childhood,
the ghost of the childhood
I would like to become
Celestial President of Cuba
Mama would be happy
And mama is sacred one
Cuba, Cuba, cubana
Legalize Marijuana
Cuba is the capital of West-India
Still closed for everyone
Jamaica is near, where people dance reggae
The same climate ? marijuana
This is Rastaman's land
The ship fled on full sails
To the heavens in a
supernatural way
Cuba, Cuba, cubana
Legalize Marijuana
Crazy wind in the sea ripped apart
Dashing flier ? nothing more to say
The bearded Fidel betrayed everyone
He hanged the sun ? but it isn't going
Oh, Jah Rastafari!
You may choose the one you want

i've always got the impression that all drugs were very illegal in the USSR, in order to build the "better, socialist man". same goes for cuba, where apparently it is very hard to get some herb...

what makes you think pot was legalized here in the early 20th century?
Lenina Rosenweg

That was a joke. I know it was legalized until the late 60s or so.

just because it was there doesn't necissarily mean people smoked it. i'm pretty sure alcohol was much easier to attain and socially acceptable in the USSR. apparently there is a huge problem with heroin and other opioids being smuggled into the russian federation, there's been a massive addict population since the 1990s.

I have a hard time believing that.
i'm pretty sure alcohol was much easier to attain and socially acceptable in the USSR.
Sure, but that tells us nothing about cannabis consumption.
apparently there is a huge problem with heroin and other opioids being smuggled into the russian federation, there's been a massive addict population since the 1990s.
I can't say I'm surprised. It seems everything went downhill since the USSR disappeared.

You destroy your dreams,
what you have inside.
You're a devistated man.
Then you're telling me that my inspiration will
be gone like the one you once had.
Life is too short,
I won't be wasting my life.
Won't waste a second of my time.
The black marks on my hands will be there
and in my heart deep down inside.
We used to always be together
but now on different sides.
I have to respect your choice to take orders
but I can't be down.
The system that you want to live in,
the one we used to fight.
I fight till I die.
My inspiration's getting stronger now.
We're a part of the new rise.
You choose to step out and I will never follow.
Can you see that in my eyes?
Society tells you what to do,
what to eat and what to drink.
Is that the way you want to live?
Then raise your glass and keep trying not to think.
A generation with open minds.
Don't let them pull you down.
It's something that's worth fighting for.
I'll stay strong till the day I die.
We are still strong.
Straight edge and proud till the day I die.
"Straight Edge till I die"

Trotsky wasn't a drinker, but he did get high.
“Give me a cigarette,” I say to Kamenev (In those years I still smoked, but only spasmodically.) I take one or two puffs, but suddenly, with the words, “Only this was lacking!” I faint. ... As I come to, I see Kamenev’s frightened face bending over me.
“Shall I get some medicine?” he asks.
“It would be much better,” I answer after a moment’s reflection, “if you got something to eat.”
