His videos are amazing. Apparently, he has been a part of some really great Marxist conferences at Pace University.
If not then it really shows his creative talents.
Check out his stuff at KAPTIALISM 101

Christ on earth I have been reading too much of this Kautsky tripe. For a second there I thought you were asking wether Brendan McCooney believed in growing political struggles out of economic struggles and generally lagging behind the 'spontaneous' working-class movement.

Haha that's what I thought as well, according to this (http://www.counterpunch.org/cooney1.html) "Brendan Cooney is a writer from Boston. He has a master's degree in cultural anthropology", but the article is from 2002 and I don't know if it's the same guy or not. I like it in his videos how he's always playing with his pipe, his glasses or he is shaking around some whiskey.

I always found that kind of pretentious, like he's trying to look like an intellectual.
Other than that, his videos are great.

I think his videos are extremely good and I think he's doing a real public service. His button down, professorial look adds to his effectiveness, I think. TVM and other Marxist videographers might be effective if they adopted some of his approach. You don't have to be a hipster or a slacker dude to be a good Marxist.

I thought it was a schtick, like he was poking fun at intellectuals while tearing down their arguments.
Anyone have a bio of him? I thought he lived in Philly.

I thought this thread said "Is Brendan Cooney a Marxist?" when I clicked on it... I was actually interested in this question. Is he a member of any political organisation? I got the impression he was just one of these acedemic marxologists who turns out to be a liberal. Good for dinner party conversation but not much else.

Christ on earth I have been reading too much of this Kautsky tripe. For a second there I thought you were asking wether Brendan McCooney believed in growing political struggles out of economic struggles and generally lagging behind the 'spontaneous' working-class movement. This is brilliant. I also like how Brendan M. Cooney suddenly turned Scottish.

I got the impression he was just one of these acedemic marxologists who turns out to be a liberal. Good for dinner party conversation but not much else. He's certainly not a liberal, and does mention communism, directly social labour, and so on. He also attacks 'market socialism' on the basis of its maintenance of capitalist social relations, so it would hardly seem apt to then advocate something even less extreme.
Other than that, I don't think that being a member of political organizations is much of a worthwhile test of anything, given present political organizations.

He's probably not an economist. I say this because he seems to have a firm grip on reality.

Why on Earth did someone gather that Cooney was a liberal?
If he is not an economist, then is he a professor? What does he do outside of making videos?

What does he do outside of making videos?
Probably eats a few times a day, sleeps, masturbates once in a while, etc.

Well that is true. None the less, being a communist is not a matter of words but a matter of action. I think if he was a member of a political organisation this would say alot.

Nooooo waaaayyyyyy
Why on Earth did someone gather that Cooney was a liberal?
Yeah thanks, that 'someone' was me. By the way, I didn't say he was a liberal.

Well that is true. None the less, being a communist is not a matter of words but a matter of action.I think that seeking to make an accessible depiction of capitalism's real workings and tendencies towards crisis is probably an important 'action', though, especially when coupled with comments on how a new society could change things. Indeed, Marx's 'Capital' was supposed to be (and was, to some extent) read by workers more than anybody else.

I know Brendan and talk crisis theory with him a lot. He's not organizationally attached, I don't think but definitely does conceive of his theoretical work as part of sharpening the tools needed for revolution. He's said in the past that he likes a lot of the Marxist Humanist Initiative (especially Kliman's) stuff.

That's good to know. If I recall, didn't B. Cooney speak at Marxism 2009 or 2010 or something?
