Were they just another RAF, Weathermen kind of group? Did their influence ever stretch very far? Or were they just a bunch of nutjobs?

They kidnapped a billionaire's daughter and turned her around, gaining them a certain notoriety.
The RAF and The Weathermen were nutjobs.

Same idea basically.
Although their tactics obviously don't work, one of the demands of the SLA was that the Hearst family would give food and money to the poor. Which they did. I thought that was kinda cool.
But these urban guerrilla groups, in non-revolutionary times anyway, don't help our cause or make things better. They may mean well and when they kill some capitalists I doubt many leftists will mourn the capitalists, but it doesnt bring socialism any closer because it scares potential socialists off and it gives the government a reason to heighten their measures against left-wing groups.

At least, they have expressed their identity... I kinda guess.

Just a group wanting to kick off their revolution at a bad time. From what I understand they weren't strictly Marxist.
