While this shouldn't come as a surprise or anything newsworthy to any of us, I thought it might be interesting to post this bit from George Washington University's National Security Archive. One of their items is a recently acquired document, dated November 27, 2001, from a summary of a meeting between Donald Rumsfeld and General Tommy Franks. Within it shows that the government, contrary to their claims that they were looking for a peaceful solution, had been planning to invade Iraq for sometime.

The document starts with a brief outline of how an Invasion of Iraq would occur. Then after that, yes, after that, comes a section called "how start", giving three possible pretexts for an invasion of Iraq:

-Saddam moves against Kurds in the North?
-US discovers Saddam connections to Sept. 11 attack or anthrax attacks?
-Dispute over WMD inspections
-Start now thinking about inspection demands

We can see now which path was chosen. It's worth noting that this bit comes after the part that discuses how the war would be conducted.

Again I know this won't come as nothing new, but it's always useful to have text straight from them.
