View Full Version : Why is Southern Rap hated on?

I may complain about how mindless some of the Southern Rap can be sometimes, but I have to say, the music down here in TX and Tennessee and ATL has some of the best beats ever!
With the exception of Jay Z, I tend to dislike Northern Rap because it's too damn depressing and violent sometimes. Eminem sounds like they gave Jason Vorhees a mic! Everything's about chopping heads and stuff. While I love the song, "Dead Wrong" by Biggie Smalls and Eminem, the lyrics are harsh enough to not enjoy it with a cup of lean.
Southern Rap is the music if you really want to lean back and just chill. Some of the stuff is just too perfect for a chilled out night. And the lyrics are so comical that it just makes you smile in a good way.
"More throwed than a football on Super bowl Sunday".
"Big Ballin' like some meat balls in a damn deli".
I mean the stuff is so ridiculous that there is a hint of genius in creating such witty lyrics. I love it.
Do the UK comrades even get Southern Rap? It seems all of you guys keep listening to rap from NYC and mimic their style but totally neglect the South's contribution to Rap.
Listen to UGK, Three Six Mafia, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Mike Jones and the whole SwishaHouse Crew!

Southern pop rap is as bad as Northern pop rap. I'm sorry but I despise for some of the artists you mentioned. "Like a Boss" was funny though. But there is good shit too.. the Screwed Up Click artists for instance. And Juvenile and Plies (who opened fire on his own audience.. i mean how rock and roll can you get).

Yeah, there is a lot of shit included within the Souther Rap game, but for the most part UGK, Slim Thug, and the Screwed Up Click produced banging beats.
Ever heard Lil Keke's "I'm a G"? The beat is sick.
Sittin' Sideways by Paul Wall?
Juvenile is whack man, c'mon! I am talking more about the chilled out tracks we listened to in high school. Plus the good stuff that's on now.
International Players Club by UGK and OutKast.

Juvenile is whack man, c'mon!oh hell no.. you did not just say that about the man who did Rodeo and Back That Ass Up. Paul Wall and Slim Thug are studio gangsters, look at them in their videos, they're like spoiled kids or something.

Back that Ass up, lol. You're taking me back, man! I forgot about that one.
Yeah of course Paul Wall and Slim Thug are studio. They say it in their songs all the time.
Mike Jones does too.
But their beats are clean man.
All in all though, do you think that Southern Rap gets hated on too quickly for not being "deep" enough like the Northern Rappers?
Also, I want to know what comrades from other regions think and comrades from outside the US.

Yeah, maybe most people think it's just about drinking codeine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seca4gktgUc), but there isn't so much regional beef anymore and it's a misconception anyway.

Man, hold up, too much lean in my cup!
Kleber, you rock man. Haven't heard these beats for a long time.
Are you from TX?

I'm from the UK and I love Southern hip hop. I was first exposed to it reading The Wire (http://www.thewire.co.uk/).

This is the song that got me to stop really hating on Souther Rap.
Before I was always a closet lover of the music while outwardly hating on it because it was seen as such a mindless genre by rap elitists.

I'll admit, I hated at first. Eventually I decided to dig a little deeper and realized that the south had a major influence on hip-hop out west, and here in the Midwest as well. Definitely some good hip-hop coming out of the south.

The Geto Boys were awesome (and hilarious, in a really wrong, "I-can't-believe-I'm-laughing-at-that kind of way).
Other than that I don't really listen to southern hip-hop, though.

To be sure, I never really got into it too deep. There are some songs I do like though. Such as this one that came out a few years ago:

Then we got this Dead Prez song with Bun B. Now I love Dead Prez, but in my humble opinion this whole album leaves something to be desired. Their lyrics are consistently weak throughout the whole thing, as this track demonstrates. Now, as for Bun B's verse, now that's good rappin'.

Enjoy!

Bun B's definitely been spreading the wealth in the form of feature spots since Pimp C passed. His solo album was alright too...just ask XXL.

Southern Rap gave up the message, the cornerstone of rap, in favor of catchy beats.
Why would I not hate southern rap?

Also, doesn't get more South than Texas:

And there is Lil Wayne, to be obvious. Going back to T.I., some of his work is misogynistic/elitist as fuck, even on songs that are still good. Take Every Chance I Get, theme song to the movie Armored:

I love southern rap. Especially Big Boi and Bun B.
The thing is, the south is hot right now and that's why it's hated on.
When the west coast got big you had people hating on the west coast, like Tim Dog with "Fuck Compton". The south is going through this right now.
To those who say southern rappers cant rhyme;

I think mainstream music in general is just crap with some catchy beats but in reality aren't really that great. There is a lot of great Southern Rap even some of the mainstream stuff and a lot of it can be deep and a lot of it can be chilled out it's just all about accepting different ideas, themes, and moods in music. I think that's the problem with most music elitist they think music should be one way and one way only because they can't fathom the diversity of ideas, themes, and moods in music.
