The purpose of this thread is to identify the Maoist leaders so that those of us who participate in discussion of the revolutionary situation in Nepal will be able to understand who the various leaders are, what their backgrounds are and where they stand in various intraparty debates (and much more).

Prachanda born Chhabilal Dahal on December 11, 1954, later Pushpa Kamal Dahal is a former guerrilla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla) leader and chairman of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Communist_Party_of_Nepal_%28Maoist%29). Prachanda led the CPN (M) as it launched an insurgency on February 13, 1996. In 2008 the ensuing civil war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepalese_Civil_War) culminated in the overthrow of the Shah dynasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shah_dynasty) in favor of a republic. About 13,000 Nepalese died in this conflict.

Prachanda's extension of Marxism-Leninism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxism-Leninism)-Maoism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maoism) -- taking specific account of Nepal's situation—is known as the Prachanda Path (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prachanda_Path). "Prachanda" is a party name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudonym#Cadre_names) literally meaning "fierce one."

The Constituent Assembly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constituent_Assembly_of_Nepal) elected Prachanda Prime Minister of Nepal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Nepal) on 16 August 2008. He was sworn in as Prime Minister on August 18, 2008. Prachanda resigned from the post on May 4, 2009 after his attempt to sack General Rookmangud Katawal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rookmangud_Katawal), the army chief, was opposed by President Ram Baran Yadav (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_Baran_Yadav). Prachanda remained in office until 23 May 23, 2009 when his successor was elected.
