What is your opinion of Gao Gang and his purge? I've seen Bill Bland's view in "Class Struggles in China" which was that Gao Gang was a genuine Marxist-Leninist and was purged by Mao for that reason. All the Maoist sources on him I've seen always just mention it in passing, along the lines of "our glorious chairman defeated the Kao-Jao anti-party group, Lin Biao etc." and don't actually go into any detail on it. I always like to see both sides of an argument, but I've only got one side here.
EDIT: I read the stuff about him using large amount of public funds to pay off numerous hardened anti-communist White Russian mistresses of his. I suppose maybe he wasn't the infallible Marxist-Leninist Bill Bland makes him out to have been.
