I used to think the idea of having a motorbike was terrible. Then I got used to being around them and seeing how happy they make their owners, so now I'm pretty open to the idea of having a motorbike.

However, I'd most likely buy used, and I'd only do so when I feel I am financially stable enough to give it decent care. I wouldn't want to have a motorbike just for the sake of having a motorbike and then making our (mine, my partner's, and my motorbike's) lives miserable because we're always strapped for cash.

Many people choose not to own a motorbike, and they live perfectly happy lives without motorbikes.

For my part, I'm looking at turning 30 soon, and I've just kind of been thinking about the future. I'm glad I didn't have a motorbike during my 20's (or worse, as a teenager). It would have just been too much responsibility. I enjoyed being free and footloose. But, now... well, if I want to have a motorbike, it's probably about time to start thinking about it. I don't want to be in my late 50's and just having my first motorbike.

Of course I am.

Impractical: How the hell can you move items of furniture larger than a chair?

Death trap: It's a hell of a lot easier to be thrown off a bike than it is to get thrown out of a car when one is wearing a seat belt.

They do save you a lot of money as far as gasoline is concerned, though.

There is no option: I have had a motorbike, loved it but can't afford one anymore. Also, in big cities they are insanely superior. I simply refuse to take a car into central Helsinki, but a motorbike will do. Why? Two points. Car slalom and parking possibilities.

That's as maybe but I always find it strange when people come into threads like this (here or elsewhere on the net) and decide to tell people that they don't care about the subject. When I see a thread on a topic I sincerly couldn't give a toss about I just don't post in it because, well, I couldn't give a toss even if I tired.

Yes, it is a bit strange that people feel the need to let everyone know that they have no opinion on a certain subject.

That could be expensive for those who don't own or can't borrow one.

Most car accidents don't involve being trapped in a burning vehicle; Hollywood has lied to you.

On the other hand, two wheels are inherently less stable than four, making bikes easier to knock over even in minor accidents. Broken necks are fun!

Cool project, but 50cc? Wouldn't it struggle to deal with any significant loads?

I plan on getting a motorcycle eventually. I think it is very useful when it comes to traffic, and saving gas. Also, its damn fun. However, you should have another vechicle for rainy or snowy days, or if you need to move shit.

if you go over 50cc you need an difrent license, pay signicicant taxes and wear an helmet. 50cc should be plenty, for really heavy loads we use my GFs wich has an four stroke engine wich has a lot more torq.

You probably can't afford a truck because you spent all of your money on furniture. And where the hell are you moving to? If you can only afford to ride a motorcycle, just sell some of your furniture before you move.

Yeah, the other day, I saw this guy riding a motorcycle, and he was having a hell of a time keeping it straight up.
The only positive to having all those tons of metal surrounding you, and airbags and shit, in a car accident, is that it keeps your dismembered corpse in one place.

This.

I don't actually think I'd have the nerve to ride one. I like having the walls of the car around to protect me, and I don't feel safe without a seatbelt.

So no. I do not intend to own a motorcycle.

Nobody said anything about paying for it. There's only one piece of furniture in my home that I actually paid money for, and that was second-hand and cheap.

Some of it? Try all of it.

How the hell does a corpse inside a car become dismembered?

Jeez, don't you watch the news?
Maybe it has to do with all that excess shit that they hang on cars: Roofs, doors, windshields, seatbelts, two extra wheels, etc.
The other day, some guy crashed into a truck hauling steel beams, and got his head obliterated by one of them. If he had been on a motorcycle, he could have maneuvered out of the way, bailed, looked like a badass, etc.

Eh, depends on the stroke, cc, center of gravity, weight, etc. Honestly, some of the safest motorcycles are the 125/250cc two-stroke engine bikes. they have a lower weight, different center of gravity and if you crash are far less likely to crush you.

As you move up in size, to the 450cc four strokes and higher, you start to mess with sketchy forces. In motocross, for example, when someone crashes and flips over the handlebars on a 250cc two-stroke, the center of gravity on the bike propels the bike away from the rider, keeping everyone involved safe. On a 450cc, the rider flips over, and the bike follows right on top of said rider's back. It's preeeeetty dangerous.

But yeah. I'd say it depends on which model of bike you get.

Motorbikes seem really scary... they're basically like driving a car at the same speed, but you're hanging onto the outside of the car.

But!

Yeah, KTM always makes really stylish bikes. Even their dirtbikes are fuckin' sexy.

IMO, you're more likely to die on a quad or in a dune buggy than on a (smaller stroke/engine size) motorcycle.

They're cheap and practical (for getting you around, not your furniture), popular in Asia and Southeast Asia for these reasons. It's true you have to be far more alert and on the defensive than when driving a car, which still won't help much when other drivers are careless, but I grew up around them and I prefer the open view and compact size.

ktm, hayabusa and few others, beautiful things no doubt, but its death on 2 wheels sadly...I have to disagree about the impractical thing with NoX though, you never have problem to be late with a motorbike(especially with the likes of gsxr, ktm etc :p) or caught in a car jam but thats the only point in bikes.I love bikes, i love seen them, how they work etc but they are just death traps, so no i dont even ride them.I would buy a few if i was rich, just to seeing them, but i wouldnt buy one to use.Cars are way better for transporting anw(and im pretty happy with mine)

I used to have a dirt bike when I was younger, and would drive that around town and in the desert with some of my other friends. Motorcycles are fun, but I don't have the money to get a brand new one, nor do I think there's any motorcycles I really could afford that I'd like the look of.
