View Full Version : Just what is a "guido"? Yes, the first official revleft thread on the Jersey Shore...

Because, I live in Houston and never heard of the term and always assumed the look was always a Hispanic thing. Hispanics really copied the look here in TX so I always assumed Guido was a Hispanic or an occasional Middle Eastern thing.

When I thought of Guido I thought of Portugese Cristiano Ronaldo or a Daddy Yannke type. I didn't know it was an Italian thing until Jersey Shore.

When I saw the cast of Jersey Shore, I assumed the cast were all Hispanic. Later on I found out they were Italian.

So is being a guido or a guidette an Italian thing or can other people pick it up because in TX the look is mostly copied by Hispanics, Arabs and Persians?

I am just so curious about this crazy Guido fad thing and the Jersey Shore. It has a lot of people razzed up. Just that the hell is this subculture all about?

"Guido" is an Italian first name, equivalent to "Guy" in English, which is where the slang term comes from. It was originally a class thing.

If guido is a negative ethinic stereotype than I would rather end the thread. If it's more about a certain lifestyle, tell me more.

IT IS a certain lifestyle, they recently "exported" to Miami, seriously.

Snooki and some other cast-member is not even Italian-American but Hispanic or some other. But usually, guidos are confined to Italian-Americans but due to shows like Jersey Shore I'm not surprise if the style is being adopted by all sorts of people.

It's just a subculture that got appropriated by popular media. Think college kids drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon, or Kid Rock pretending to be "white trash."

I'm "Italian-American," and I don't care about "negative ethnic stereotypes" about Italians at all.

Being a guido has about as much to do with ethnicity as being a chav does. It's just a lifestyle, as other people have said.

Right, but it was originally a term for young, working-class Italian men who got in fights at bars and shit like that. The "lifestyle" then got appropriated. Lifestyles come from culture, culture comes from class society.

I read she is Chilean. Considering she has an Italian surname, I figured she was Italian-Chilean. I am Chilean of Italian decent.

It seems like unless you're Argentinean, it's hard for people to believe that other Latinos have Italian ancestry.

Either way, most of the cast is ethnic white non-Wasp-ish. A mix of working class Irish, Hispanic, Italian and Polish.

It's sad to see that the stereotypes surrounding the ethnic whites listed above are still pervasive in American society.

I'm not surprised...

Considering how Chile (and Uruguay) are similar to Argentina~! ;)

However, in Miami, when I met many Latin-Americans from Italian backgrounds they didn't go on and become the stereotypical "guido" alla Jersey Shore show.

Her last name is the name of the Italian American family that adopted her from Chile.

I think someone should start an internet meme that her biological parents were disappeared during the Pinochet years for being prominent leftist activists.

For what it's worth about ancestries, Wikipedia (fffffffffff) puts out this much,

Nicole Polizzi was born in Santiago, Chile. Polizzi is of Italian Chilean descent, and was adopted and raised by Italian American parents.

Though there is a cast member looking through that list that is put as "Irish-Spanish".

Haven't watched the show myself (haven't seen much TV recently anyways), but I hear enough of it on the internet.

She's from Chile, but "Chilean" is a nationality and not a race. I'd imagine that she has some Amerindian admixture in addition to the Northern African admixture that Italians have on average, making her a mestiza, technically.

Chile is probably more Indian than Uruguay and Argentina (which still have the reputation of being the whitest countries in Latin and South America), because of its adjacence to the Andean cultural region that was characterized by high indigenous population numbers because of its long and established history of extensive agriculture. But it's certainly not Peru or Bolivia; it's worthy of being described as a white-mestizo country.

exactly
it is an ethnic slur

MTV does not define what is what is not offensive and demeaning

there are few things that disgust me more than this current backlash against political correctness that dictates that all language is equally acceptable and inocuous. "freedom of expression" that ultimately leaves the most underprivileged and vulnerable members of society in an even more vulnerable position. we can't let cocky self indulgent individualist MTV-watching priviledged bourgeois white boys redefine the dynamics of social relations and ethnic identity.

Guido used to be an Italian racial slur, and still is among people who don't watch shitty TV.

Now it describes people-regardless of race, but they're mostly white (or orange from their fake tans)-with the characteristics of the douchebags posted above. Ridiculous amounts of time and money spent on spiky, greasy hair (I'm talking a bottle of gel per day here), Crucifix necklace, and gross, gross fake tans. YOU ARE AT THE JERSEY SHORE. YOU DO HAVE TIME FOR A REAL TAN.

They also have shitloads of sex, which is gross in its own right, but when you think of these people breeding, you become absolutely terrified.

Chile is what Spaniards referred to as a Castizo nation. White-Mestizo rather than White-Amerindian. Although I really do not know how you can really verify the different admixtures of Native and Spanish blood, but I can see how Chile is distinguished from both Argentina/Uruguay and Bolivia/Peru.

Northern Chile is more like Peru, while Southern Chile tends to have the more German/Italian influence.

My grandparents are of Italian decent but are as Chilean as the Cueca! Chile is a very nationalistic country.

I'd wear that flag on everything I own. Not because I'm Albanian, but because every fucking thing about it is badass. One is the eagle. TWO-HEADED MASSIVE PREDATORY BIRD.

Two is the hat. That's Skanderbeg's helm. That was the guy who may have invented guerilla warfare, took a handful of guys, and kicked the Ottoman Empire's ass back across Europe. That's right. Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, one of the most badass soldiers in history, with the most badass name in history, was so badass that his badass hat got put on the most badass flag of all time.

Oh no, I meant that I began to care a bit about how I looked in front of people in general. As in, I noticed I was caring if I looked nice enough for this or that restaurant, clothes, hair, etc. Not much, like a guido, but I noticed that I was becoming more aware of what other people thought of me.
