View Full Version : Have You Ever Fired a Gun?

Just a general census to find out how many of the people here have any experience with firearms. Personally, I use guns recreationally and go shooting at ranges from time to time, usually with handguns and sometimes trap shooting with shotguns. I've never fired a rifle and I desperately desire to get my hands on one.
I've always felt that anyone who dares to refer to themselves as "revolutionary" should have at least a cursory knowledge of firearms- if not of their inner workings, at least enough experience shooting to not be a complete newcomer. After all guns are intimidating even for the bearer at first; one has to get used to the weight, the noise, the recoil and the burden of responsibility that comes with carrying any deadly weapon.
In other words, if you're caught up in a worker uprising and someone tosses you a rifle and you hold the stock up to your face, you're doing it wrong.

I've shot plenty of guns over the years, and own a couple myself, though not all of them are here in the US as California gun laws are a serious ***** when it comes to owning a firearm. There's all this and that paper work that needs to be filed, blah, blah, blah. So most of my guns I own are outside the US, or at the very least, California. Most of my time up at the range is when I'm on Summer Vacation, and the range is usually just out in the desert.

30-06, Mini 14, .223, .22, .38 Special, .44 Magnum, 12 & 20 gauge shotguns, 9MM, M1 Garand, AR-15, AK-47, .50 rifle, some others...
Most people in Alaska (where I grew up) have a good stockpile of guns and ammo. Kids learn how to shoot from a young age.

Used a shotgun before, not too bad with it but I'm not extensively versed in guns or anything. Didn't find it intimidating, though.
Anyway I think it's the height of pretention and, perhaps based in misaprehension, to declare that anyone that carries the name revolutionary should be versed in firearms. The revolution is unlikely to occur in my lifetime or, if it does, while I'll be physically capable of fighting. I'm not a pacifist by any stretch of the imagination but it's silly to come out with bollocks like that.

There's always a revolution going on somewhere. Maybe not in your country. Preparedness is the most important part of being a revolutionary. I'm not quite satisfied with being a lifelong armchair revolutionary.
And an edit: I wouldn't say it's very pretentious to say that someone who calls themselves a revolutionary should know a thing or two about guns, considering guns are pretty proletarian and at least in my country extremely available. If they're not available, it doesn't take much to at least know a few things for preparedness' sake.

I don't think I've actually seen a gun in person, although I may have seen armed police. I'm not sure. Anyway, depending on where you live, you might not have as much access to guns. I don't know anyone who has fired a real gun.

Hunting and self-defense seem like much more practical applications of firearm knowledge than The Revolution at this point in time.

I'm from a small town in the US so of course I'm familiar with guns, about 60% of the population is to some extent even if they've never actually fired one.

I have a BB gun that I use to kill mice that I find in the house. Sometimes the BB doesn't kill the mouse but merely stuns it for a few minutes, so after shooting it I pick up by the tail, carry it outside, and then I step on it.

I was good enough at shooting in the Army Cadets to get on the shooting team. Learning to handle and fire a real rifle is both a sobering and exhilarating experience. I think everyone should try it at least once.

.22 Lee Enfield, L98 cadet rifle and a shotgun.
Oh yes, i also got to fire a scoped rifle once in a university shooting and paintball club.
I was in the cadets like Noxion, but the ATC rather than the army which is the air force counterpart.

I'm a little apprehensive about the noise and recoil. That's perfectly natural. It's a little scary the first few times, I was particularly intimidated by the .44 magnum and my first experiences with shotguns. In all honesty I find the recoil worse for handguns than I do for shotguns (therefore probably also rifles since they're mounted in the same way) because handgun recoil is all on your wrist, while with shoulder-mounted weapons the recoil is distributed- assuming you're holding the weapon correctly- throughout your entire torso, centered on your shoulder.
The noise is unpleasant, especially if your ears are unprotected. I shot with 12 gauge shotguns with my earplugs not put in properly and I couldn't hear well for the rest of the day, it was like I had been at a loud concert for 4 hours. It's just something you have to get acquainted with.

I haven't shot a gun in a few years, but my father and I used to go hunting and shoot targets a lot.
