View Full Version : Ron Paul & Anarchy: A Conversation

I think this belongs in Chit-Chat, seeing how it doesn't really pertain asking much, as it does to just a funny conversation I had today. Anyway...

So today while I was coming home from class, I ran into some friends (chick/dude) from a class we had together a few semesters ago, that were Anarchists and/or associated themselves with Anarchist tendencies. Well somehow we got into the topic of Anarchism and politics again, and what they just generally mean to the age group in the 20s. (Which we're all apart of.) Specifically Anarchy and the Green Party somehow.

Well the chick I know from the class, at the time was all about Anarcho-Communism, and associated herself with Anarcho-Communism only. She didn't really care much about the other Anarchist ways, etc. but for some strange reason she also had this "infancy stage" liking of Ron Paul; she explained to me her reasoning at the time being that even though he wasn't close to any sort of Anarchism, and probably would be against Anarchism, she found him to be the most suitable person to vote for if she ever decided to vote when he was running. So, me and the other guy today were talking to her about Ron Paul and this strange fixation she suddenly had with him. Nowadays, not like before, she no longer cares about Anarchism and just doesn't care about Left, Center, or Right Politics, and says they can all go to hell. Which I don't care, I practically agree with her on that sometimes, but that's not the point.

She was telling us more and more, how she'd come to like Ron Paul, and that over the summer break she'd gone to Boston to spend time with some friends that live there. She told us, they were self proclaimed Anarchists, and how they were all about Ron Paul being elected (which is weird for any Anarchist to say, IMO.) Well while she was there, one of these "Anarchists" told her all about how great Anarchy was, blah, blah, blah, long story short he sounded like a cheap swindler, rather someone actually educated on Anarchism and it's history. Anyway, so she finally gets to the point, that this "Anarchist" says, "Thanks to Ron Paul, Anarchism has actually picked up and become a lot more popular! Especially in our age group." (I find that hard to believe, but I don't have any information to say it's true or not true. Just word of mouth from a "Anarchist" swindler.)

Anyway, so I just started laughing my ass off, I even dropped my drink in the process of laughing at the comment. She didn't find it so funny, since now she's all about Ron Paul, even though she thinks all political sides can go to hell. So I just want to thank Ron Paul for making Anarchy, (in the Eastern United States at least), more popular with young people in their 20s. Thank you Ron Paul, thank you.

Ron Paul man. He molded mercantilist ideology and helped scape the Glorious Revolution in England.
Not only that, but he also managed to build a pimped out palace at Versailles and attempt to suppress the protestant Dutch revolt.

Pretty cool guy, eh?

I think she's referring to Ron Paul making anarcho-capitalism more popular, so I don't think there is much to thank him for.

Most people don't make the distinction between anti-Capitalist Anarchism and Anarcho-Capitalism, especially teenagers. It's just "OMG I'M AN ANARCHIST LOL VOTE 4 RON PAUL". They hear "government is bad" and immediately assume that it's in agreement with them. Sounds like these friends have a lot of ideological progress to make.

It boils down to this:

Didn't Ron Paul write critiques of the Left Hegelians like Bruno Bauer and Feurbach? Wasn't he the guy who wrote "Declaration of the Rights of Man"?

Oh wait...

Ron Paul writes books verbally fellating Ludwig Mises and his ruling-class school of economics, and oddball goldbug tirades, and trite "manifestos" about alleged "revolutions."

I knew that already. I think they named a city in Minnesota after him.

Nah, she knows the difference. Like I said, she was at one time a strong Anarcho-Communist through and through, but has just recently fallen out of politics and thinks all sides are just trying to get their way from different angles. It's her friends in Boston who haven't come to the pictures conclusion. But I'm not sure their money class, so they might just be idiotic middle class college kids?

I have noticed weird things like this where self-described 'anarchists' will have some mind-blowingly fucked up political positions. I know a guy in France who describes himself as an 'anarcho-communist' but who supports the '36 Front Populaire and thinks that criticism of them is 'petty' and 'ideological'! This guy is also a big Chomsky fan though, so that might have something to do with it.

He also partakes in events with Alex Jones and has had a racist newsletter.

That scene was just painful to watch. Then again, that whole movie was painful to watch.

I always knew he was secretly Gandalf (the looks couldn't just be a coincidence!). It's unfortunate that Ronny's using his powers for evil.

My favorite description of him was my friend's, who described him (when we watched Bruno) as a "sad puppy".

I'll have to ask her is she affiliates herself with Randite leanings.

I think one time Mike Huckabee tried to say his views weren't far from Anarchism.
